A New Translation of

The Gospel

according to

Mark

Based on the Westcott and Hort Text of 1881 with references to the Papyrus fragments of the Chester Beatty collections, c. 3rd Century A.D. and the Sinaitic Manuscript of the 4th Century.

Some notes on this translation:

Thou vs. YOU: Many people today have a hard time understanding the Elizabethan usage of thou, thee, thy, etc. For this reason, we have chosen to avoid this archaic language. At the same time, we need to be able to fulfill the purpose of those words, which was to distinguish between a singular you and a plural YOU. Following the example of other translations, we have used all capital letters to indicate plural (more than one person addressed), and small letters to indicate singular (one person addressed).

Words in italics: Following the example of other translations, we have used italics for words that are not in the original text, but which are essential to the sense of the original when translated into English. Unlike other translations, however, we have NOT added words which alter the meaning of the original.

Words in (parentheses): These are not part of the biblical text, but are notes of explanation from the translator.

Man and Woman vs. Husband and Wife: Greek has no specific words for husband or wife, but uses the words man and woman, as do many other languages. We have translated the words man and woman as such, but in proper context, the readers should understand them to mean husband and wife.

Perfect vs. Complete: Many English versions use the word “perfect” both as a verb and as an adjective, to translate a particular Greek root. We have also used it occasionally, but it should be understood as perfect in the sense of “complete” and not in the sense of “without flaw.”

Mark 1

1 The beginning of the Good News of Jesus Christ: (some manuscripts add: “the Son of God.”)

2 Just as it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Look, I’m sending my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way:

3 The voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight’”,

4 John came, baptizing in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance into forgiveness of sins.

5 And all the country of Judea and the Jerusalemites were going out to him, and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, openly confessing their sins.

6 And John was clothed with camel's hair, and a leather belt about his hips, and ate locusts and wild honey.

7 And he was preaching, saying, ‘The one who is stronger than I is coming behind me, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and loosen.

8 I baptized YOU in water, but he will baptize YOU in the Holy Spirit.’

9 And it happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

10 And coming up at once out of the water, he saw the heavens split open, and the Spirit coming down to him like a dove:

11 And a voice came out of the heavens, ‘You are my beloved Son, I am well pleased in you.’

12 And at once the Spirit drove him out into the wilderness.

13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were serving him.

14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God,

15 and saying, ‘The time has been fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has drawn near: repent, and believe in the gospel.’

16 And passing beside the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, Simon’s brother, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen.

17 And Jesus said to them, ‘Come after me, and I will cause YOU to become fishers of men.’

18 And at once they left the nets, and followed him.

19 And having gone a little further, he saw James (Jacob) the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, while they were in the boat mending the nets.

20 And at once he called them: and leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired workers, they went after him.

21 And they’re going into Capernaum; and immediately he entered into the synagogue on the Sabbath and was teaching.

22 And they were astonished at his teaching: For he was teaching them as having authority, and not like the scribes.

23 And a man with an unclean spirit was in their synagogue then, and he cried out,

24 saying, ‘What do we have to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Did you come to destroy us? I know you, who you are: the Holy One of God!’

25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Shut up, and come out of him!’ (Shut up: Literally “be muzzled,” a cultural equivalent of “shut up.”)

26 And the unclean spirit, having convulsed him and having cried with a loud voice, came out of him.

27 And all were amazed, to the point that they were discussing among themselves, saying, ‘What is this? A new teaching with authority, and he commands the unclean spirits, and they obey him!’

28 And then the report of him went out everywhere into the whole region around Galilee.

29 And then, having gone out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James (Jacob) and John.

30 But Simon's mother-in-law was lying down burning with fever; and at once they tell him about her:

31 and coming over, he lifted her up, having taken her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she served them.

32 But when evening had come, when the sun set, they were bringing to him all those who were ill, and those possessed by demons.

33 And the whole city had gathered together at the door.

34 And he healed many who were sick with various sicknesses, and threw out many demons; and he wasn’t letting the demons speak, because they knew him to be Christ.

35 And very early, while still night, he stood up and went out, and went into a private place, and was prayed there.

36 And Simon and those with him hunted him down;

37 and they found him, and say to him, ‘All are looking for you.’

38 And he says to them, ‘Let’s go elsewhere into the next towns, so I might preach there too; for this is why I went out.’

39 And he came into their synagogues throughout the whole of Galilee, preaching and throwing out demons.

40 And a leper is coming toward him, beseeching him, and kneeling down, saying to him, ‘If you want to, you can make me clean.’

41 And being moved with compassion, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and says to him, ‘I do want to; be made clean.’

42 And at once the leprosy went away from him, and he was made clean.

43 And he having given him strict orders, and then sent him out,

44 and says to him, ‘See that you tell nothing to anyone: but go show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing the things Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.’

45 But he, having gone out, began to proclaim it quite a bit, and to spread the word, so much that Jesus could no longer openly enter into a city, but was outside in private places: and they were coming to him from all sides.

Mark 2

1 And having entered again into Capernaum after some days, it was heard that he was in a house.

2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the door: and he was speaking the word to them.

3 And they come to him bringing a paralytic, carried by four people.

4 And not being able to bring him near to him because of the crowd, they removed the roof where he was: and having torn it up, they lower the mattress where the paralytic was lying.

5 And Jesus, having seen their faith, says to the paralytic, ‘Child, your sins are forgiven.’

6 But some of the scribes were sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,

7 ‘Why does this one talk like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins except one, God?’

8 And then Jesus, having discerned in his spirit that they are reasoning like that within themselves, says to them, “Why are YOU reasoning these things in YOUR hearts?

9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your mattress, and walk’?

10 But so that YOU might know that the Son of man has authority to forgive sins on earth  --he says to the paralytic --

11 ‘I’m telling you, get up, pick up your mattress, and go to your house.’”

12 And he got up, and then, having picked up the mattress, he went out in front of all; so that they were all beside themselves, and were glorifying God, saying, ‘We never saw anything like this!’

13 And he went out again by the sea; and all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them.

14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office, and he says to him, ‘Follow me.’ And standing up, he followed him.

15 And it happens as he was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were reclining at the table with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they were following him.

16 And the scribes of the Pharisees, having seen that he eats with the sinners and tax collectors, were saying to his disciples, ‘He eats with tax collectors and sinners?’

17 And Jesus, hearing it, says to them, ‘Those who are strong have no need of a physician, but those who are ill: I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners.’

18 And John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting: and they come and say to him, ‘Why are John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fasting, but your disciples aren’t fasting?’

19 And Jesus said to them, ‘Can the sons of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. (“sons of the bridechamber” This corresponds to the best man and other male attendants in a wedding party.)

20 But days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day.

21 No one sews a patch of untreated cloth on an old garment: otherwise the new one pulls the fullness from the old, and the tear becomes worse. (that is, if an patch that is not preshrunk and treated is sewn in, it will shrink, and further tear the old garment)

22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, as well as the skins: but they put new wine into new wine-skins.’

23 And it happened that he was going through the grain fields on the Sabbath; and his disciples began to pluck the heads of grain on the way.

24 And the Pharisees were saying to him, ‘See, why are they doing what isn’t right on the Sabbath?’

25 And he said to them, ‘Didn’t YOU ever read what David did, when he had need, and was hungry, he, and those with him?

26 How he entered into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the showbread, which it isn’t right to eat, except for the priests, and also gave to those who were with him?’

27 And he said to them, ‘The Sabbath came to be for the sake of man, and not man for the sake of the Sabbath:

28 so the Son of man is also Lord of the Sabbath.’

Mark 3

1 And he entered into the synagogue again; and a man was there who had a withered hand.

2 And they were watching him, whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him.

3 And he says to the man who had the withered hand, ‘Stand up in the middle.’

4 And he says to them, ‘Is it right to do good on the Sabbath, or to do evil; to save a life, or to kill?’ But they were silent.

5 And having looked around at them with anger, being grieved at the callousness of their heart, he says to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ And he stretched it out; and his hand was restored.

6 And going out, the Pharisees at once took counsel against him with the Herodians, so they might destroy him.

7 And Jesus with his disciples withdrew to the sea: and a great multitude from Galilee followed; and from Judea,

8 and from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and the other side of the Jordan, and around Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, hearing how many things he was doing, came to him.

9 And he spoke to his disciples, so that a little boat should be in constant attendance on him because of the crowd, so that they wouldn’t crowd him:

10 for he healed many; to the point that as many as had diseases were grabbing him so that they might touch him.

11 And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw him, fell down before him, and cried out, saying, ‘You are the Son of God!’

12 And he censured them much so that they wouldn’t make him known.

13 And he goes up into the mountain, and calls to himself whom he wanted; and they went to him.

14 And he made a group of twelve, who he also called ‘apostles’ (apostle: “one who is sent”), so that they might be with him, and so that he might send them out to preach,

15 and to have authority to throw out demons:

16 and he made the group of twelve and he put on Simon the name of Peter;

17 and James (Jacob) the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James (Jacob); and he put on them the name of Boanerges, which is, ‘sons of thunder’:

18 and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James (Jacob) the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Canaanite,

19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. And he comes into a house.

20 And the crowd gathers again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.

21 And when his relatives heard it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they were saying, ‘He is beside himself.’

22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, ‘He has Beelzebul’, and, ‘He throws out demons by the ruler of the demons.’ (Beelzebul: “lord of manure” a variant of Beelzebub: “lord of flies”, i.e., Satan.)

23 And having called them over to him, he was speaking to them in parables, ‘How can Satan throw out Satan?

24 And if a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.

25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.

26 And if Satan has risen up against himself, and was divided, he cannot stand, but has an end.

27 But no one can enter into the house of the strong man, and plunder his belongings, unless he first ties up the strong man; and then he will plunder his house.

28 Amen I’m telling YOU that all things will be forgiven to the sons of men, the sins and the blasphemies, whatever they might blaspheme:

29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an everlasting sin.’

30 Because they were saying, ‘He has an unclean spirit.’

31 And his mother and his brothers are coming; and, standing outside, they sent to him, calling him.

32 And a crowd was sitting around him; and they say to him, ‘Look, your mother and your brothers are outside looking for you.’

33 And answering them, he says, ‘Who is my mother and my brothers?’

34 And looking around at those sitting in a circle around him, he says, ‘See my mother and my brothers!

35 Whoever does the will of God, this is my brother, and sister, and mother.’

Mark 4

1 And again he started teaching by the sea. And an enormous crowd gathered to him, so that he got into a boat, and sat in the sea; and all the crowd were on the land by the sea.

2 And he was teaching them many things in parables, and was saying to them in his teaching,

3 ‘Listen: Look, the sower went out to sow:

4 and it happened, as he sowed, some fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate it up.

5 And other fell on the rocky ground, where it didn’t have much earth; and it sprang up at once, because it had no depth of earth:

6 and when the sun rose, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it dried up.

7 And other fell into the thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.

8 And others fell into the good ground, and were yielding fruit, growing up and increasing; and bringing in by thirties, and sixties, and hundreds.’

9 And he said, ‘Who has ears to hear, let him hear.’

10 And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables.

11 And he said to them, ‘The mystery of the kingdom of God has been given to YOU: but to those who are outside, all things happen in parables:

12 so that looking they might look, and not see; and hearing they might hear, and not understand; so they won’t ever turn around, and it should be forgiven to them.’

13 And he says to them, ‘Don’t YOU understand this parable? Then how will YOU know all the parables?

14 The sower is sowing the word.

15 And these are they by the road side, where the word is being sown; and when they have heard, at once Satan comes, and takes away the word which has been sown in them.

16 And these likewise are they that are sown upon the rocky places, who, when they have heard the word, receive it with joy immediately;

17 and they have no root in themselves, but they are temporary; then, when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, then they stumble.

18 And others are they that are sown in the thorns; these are the ones who have heard the word,

19 and the anxieties of the age, and the delusion of riches, and the desires for other things, making their way in, choke the word together, and it becomes unfruitful.

20 And those are they that were sown upon the good ground; who are hearing the word, and accept it, and bear fruit, by thirties, and sixties, and a hundreds.’

21 And he said to them, ‘Is the lamp brought in order to be put under the bushel, or under the bed, and not in order to be put on the lamp stand?

22 For nothing is hidden, except so that it should be manifested; neither was kept secret, but so that it should come into the open.

23 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.’

24 And he said to them, ‘Pay attention to what YOU are hearing. With what measure YOU measure it will be measured to YOU; and more will be added to YOU.

25 For whoever has, it will be given to him: and whoever does not have, what he does have will also be taken from him.’

26 And he said, ‘The kingdom of God is like this, like when a man throws seed upon the earth;

27 and sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he doesn’t know how.

28 The earth bears fruit of itself; first the blade of grass, next the head of the stalk, then the full grain in the head.

29 But when the fruit is yielded, he then sends in the sickle, because the harvest has come.’

30 And he said, ‘How might we compare the kingdom of God? Or in what parable might we put it?

31 It is like a grain of mustard, which, when it is sown upon the earth, being smaller than all the seeds that are upon the earth,

32 but when it is sown, it grows up, and becomes greater than all the vegetables, and produces great branches, so that the birds of the heaven can lodge under its shade.’

33 And with many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it;

34 but without a parable he didn’t speak to them: but privately to his own disciples he explained all things.

35 And on that day, when evening had come, he says to them, ‘Let’s go over to the other side.’

36 And dismissing the crowd, they take him in the boat he was in. And other boats were with him.

37 And a great windstorm came up, and the waves were beating into the boat, to the point where the boat was now filling up.

38 And he was in the stern, sleeping on the pillow: and they wake him up, and say to him, ‘Teacher, is it of no concern to you that we are perishing?’

39 And waking up, he rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Be quiet; shut up!’ And the wind abated, and there was a great calm. (“shut up” - See Mark 1:25)

40 And he said to them, ‘Why are YOU so timid? Don’t YOU still have faith?’

41 And they feared greatly, and were saying to one another, ‘So who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?’

Mark 5

1 And they came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.

2 And when he had gotten out of the boat, right away a man with an unclean spirit met him out of the tombs,

3 who had his residence in the mausoleums: and no one could bind him any longer, not even with a chain;

4 because he had been bound many times with fetters and chains, and the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the fetters smashed: and no one had enough strength to tame him.

5 And all night and day, in the mausoleums and in the mountains, he was crying out, and cutting himself with stones.

6 And having seen Jesus from afar, he ran and worshipped him;

7 and crying out with a loud voice, says, ‘What do I have to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, that you not torment me!’

8 For he was telling it, ‘Come out, unclean spirit, out of the man!

9 And he asked it, ‘What is your name?’ And it says to him, ‘My name is Legion, because we are many.’

10 And it was beseeching him much that he would not send them away out of the country.

11 Now a great herd of swine was feeding there on the mountain.

12 And they besought him, saying, ‘Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.’

13 And he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out, and entered into the swine: and the herd rushed over the precipice into the sea, about two thousand; and they were drowned in the sea.

14 And those feeding them fled, and told it in the city, and in the fields. And they came to see what it was that had happened.

15 And they come to Jesus, and see him the demon possessed man sitting, clothed and having a sound mind, the one who had the legion: and they became afraid.

16 And those who had seen told them how it happened to the demon possessed man, and about the swine.

17 And they started beseeching him to depart from their borders.

18 And as he was getting into the boat, the one who had been demon possessed besought him that he might be with him.

19 And he didn’t let him, but says to him, ‘Go back to your house, to your own people, and tell them what things the Lord has done for you, and had mercy on you.’

20 And he went off, and began to proclaim in Decapolis what Jesus had done for him: and all were wondering.

21 And when Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd was gathered to him; and he was by the sea.

22 And one of the rulers of the synagogue comes, Jairus by name; and seeing him, he falls at his feet,

23 and beseeches him much, saying, ‘My little daughter is at her last: I ask that you come and put your hands on her, so that she might be well, and might live.’

24 And he went with him; and a great crowd was following him, and they were pressing against him.

25 And a woman, who had a flow of blood twelve years,

26 and had suffered many things by many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and had benefited nothing, but rather had become worse,

27 having heard the things about Jesus, came in the crowd from behind, and touched his garment.

28 For she said, ‘If I just touch his garments, I will be well.’

29 And at once the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she knew in her body that she was healed of the disease.

30 And Jesus, having recognized in himself right away that power had gone out of him, turned around in the crowd, and said, ‘Who touched my garments?’

31 And his disciples said to him, ‘You see the crowd pressing against you, and you’re saying, Who touched me?’

32 And he was looking around to see the one who had done this.

33 But the woman being frightened and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell before him, and told him all the truth.

34 And he said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be in health from your disease.’

35 While he was still speaking, they come from the house of the ruler of the synagogue saying, ‘Your daughter died: why bother the Teacher any further?’

36 But Jesus, overhearing the word spoken, says to the ruler of the synagogue, ‘Don’t be afraid; just believe.’

37 And he wouldn’t let anyone follow with him, except Peter, and James (Jacob), and John the brother of James (Jacob).

38 And they come into the house of the ruler of the synagogue; and he sees a tumult, and many weeping and wailing aloud.

39 And having come in, he says to them, ‘Why are YOU making a tumult, and weeping? The child hasn’t died, but is sleeping.’

40 And they were laughing scornfully at him. But he, having thrown them all out, takes the father of the child and the mother and those with him, and goes in where the child was.

41 And having taken the hand of the child, he says to her, ‘Talitha kumi’; which is, being translated, ‘Little girl, I’m telling you, get up!’

42 And immediately the little girl rose up, and was walking around; for she was twelve years old. And then they were beside themselves with a great amazement.

43 And he charged them strictly that no one should know this: and he said to give her something to eat.

Mark 6

1 And he went out from there; and he comes into his homeland; and his disciples follow him.

2 And when the Sabbath had come, he began teaching in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astounded, saying, ‘Where did he get these things?’ and, ‘What is the wisdom given to this man, and such powerful works done by his hands?

3 Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James (Jacob), and Joses (Joseph), and Judas, and Simon? And aren’t his sisters here by us?’ And they were being stumbled in him.

4 And Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is not without honor, except in his homeland, and among his relatives, and in his house.’

5 And he wasn’t able to do even one powerful work there, except to put his hands on a few sick people, and heal them.

6 And he wondered because of their lack of faith. And he went around the villages in a circuit teaching.

7 And he calls the twelve to him, and began to send them out two by two; and he gave them authority over the unclean spirits;

8 and he instructed them to take nothing for the road, but only a staff; no bread, no wallet, no money in their belt;

9 but having tied on their sandals: and, not to wear two coats.

10 And he said to them, ‘Wherever YOU enter into a house, stay there until YOU go out from there.

11 And whatever place won’t receive YOU, and won’t hear YOU, as YOU’re going away from there, shake off the dust that is under YOUR feet for a testimony to them.’

12 And having gone out, they preached so that people would repent.

13 And they threw out many demons, and anointed many sick with oil, and healed them.

14 And King Herod heard, for his name had become known: and they were saying, ‘John the Baptizer has been raised from the dead, and that’s why these powerful works are being done by him.’

15 But others were saying, ‘It is Elijah.’ And others were saying, ‘A prophet, like one of the prophets.’

16 But Herod, having heard, said, ‘John, whom I beheaded, he was raised up.’

17 For Herod himself had sent out and took hold of John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's woman; because he had married her.

18 For John had said to Herod, ‘It isn’t right for you to have your brother's woman.’

19 And Herodias was holding a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him; and she couldn’t,

20 for Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and was keeping him safe. And having heard him, he was at a loss; and he heard him gladly.

21 And when a convenient day had come, when Herod made a dinner for his lords on his birthday, and the colonels, and the chief men of Galilee;

22 and when his daughter by Herodias had come in and danced, she pleased Herod and those reclining at the table with him; and the king said to the little girl, ‘Ask me for whatever you want, and I’ll give it to you.’

23 And he swore to her, ‘Whatever you might ask me for, I will give it to you, up to half of my kingdom.’

24 And having gone out, she said to her mother, ‘What should I ask for?’ And she said, ‘The head of John the Baptizer.’

25 And she came in right away to the king with haste, and asked, saying, ‘I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a plate right away.’

26 And the king became deeply sad; but because of his oaths, and those reclining at the table, he didn’t want to disregard her.

27 And at once the king sent a bodyguard, and gave the order to bring his head. And he went and beheaded him in the prison,

28 and brought his head on a plate, and gave it to the little girl; and the little girl gave it to her mother.

29 And his disciples having heard, they came and took his corpse, and put it in a tomb.

30 And the apostles gathered together to Jesus; and they told him all things, everything they did, and everything they taught.

31 And he says to them, ‘Come, YOU YOURSELVES, apart into a private place, and rest up a little. For many were coming and going, and they didn’t even have free time to eat.

32 And they went away in the boat to a private place apart.

33 And they saw them going, and many knew, and they ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them.

34 And having gone out, he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd: and he began teaching them many things.

35 And the hour having already gotten late, his disciples came to him, and said, ‘The place is remote, and the hour is already late;

36 let them go, so that going into the surrounding fields and villages, they might buy themselves something to eat.’

37 But he answered and said to them, ‘YOU give them something to eat.’ And they say to him, ‘Should we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give them to eat?’

38 And he says to them, ‘How many loaves do YOU have? Go and see.’ And when they knew, they say, ‘Five, and two fish.’

39 And he directed them all to lie down by groups on the green grass.

40 And they got down in rows, by hundreds, and by fifties.

41 And he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and broke the loaves; and he gave to the disciples to put by them; and he divided the two fish to all.

42 And they all ate, and were satisfied.

43 And they picked up broken pieces, twelve baskets full, and from the fish.

44 And those having eaten the loaves were five thousand men.

45 And then he made his disciples get into the boat, and to go ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he lets the crowd go.

46 And having said goodbye to them, he went off into the mountain to pray.

47 And when evening had come, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he alone on the land.

48 And seeing them being tormented in the rowing, for the wind was against them, about the fourth watch of the night (about 6 a.m.) he comes toward them, walking on the sea; and wanted to go past them:

49 but they, having seen him walking on the sea, thought that it was a spirit, and cried out;

50 for they all saw him, and were troubled. But he spoke with them at once, and says to them, ‘Take courage: I am. Don’t be afraid.’

51 And he went up to them, into the boat; and the wind abated. And they were very much amazed in themselves;

52 for they hadn’t understood the loaves, but their heart was calloused.

53 And having crossed over, they came to the land, into Gennesaret, and were moored.

54 And when they had gotten out of the boat, at once the people recognized him,

55 and ran around that whole region, and began to carry around on their beds those who were ill, wherever they heard he was.

56 And wherever he entered, into villages, or into cities, or into fields, they put the sick in the marketplaces, and were beseeching him that they might just touch the fringe of his garment: and as many as touched him were made well.

Mark 7

1 And the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, are gathered together to him,

2 and having seen that some of his disciples ate their bread with defiled hands, that is, unwashed --

3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, don’t eat unless they wash their hands thoroughly, clinging to the tradition of the elders;

4 and from the market-place, unless they sprinkle, they don’t eat; and there are many other things which they received to cling to, immersions of cups, and pitchers, and copper vessels.--

5 And the Pharisees and the scribes ask him, ‘Why don’t your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with defiled hands?’

6 And he said to them, “Isaiah prophesied well about YOU hypocrites, as it is written, ‘This people honors me with the lips, but their heart stays far from me.

7 But they are worshiping me in vain, teaching the commands of men for doctrines.’

8 Leaving the commandment of God, YOU cling to the tradition of men.”

9 And he said to them, “YOU actually ignore the commandment of God, so that YOU might keep YOUR tradition.

10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘The one cursing father or mother, let him die the death’:

11 but YOU say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, Whatever benefit you might get out of me is a Corban, that is, a gift of sacrifice.’

12 YOU no longer let him to do anything for his father or his mother;

13 invalidating the word of God by YOUR tradition, which YOU handed down: and YOU do many similar things.”

14 And he called the crowd to him again, and said to them, ‘Hear me all of YOU, and understand:

15 there is nothing from outside the man that can defile him going into him; but the things coming out of the man are those that defile the man.

16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.’ (This verse is omitted in some manuscripts.)

17 And when he entered into the house from the crowd, his disciples asked him about the parable.

18 And he says to them, ‘Are YOU so without understanding also? Don’t YOU understand that everything from outside going into the man, cannot defile him,

19 because it doesn’t go into his heart, but into his belly, and goes out into the toilet? (literally “place of sitting apart”)  --making all foods clean.’

20 And he said, ‘But what comes out of the man, that defiles the man.

21 For from inside, out of the heart of men, come evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries,

22 greed, wicked acts, deceit, loose conduct, an evil eye, blasphemy, haughtiness, foolishness:

23 all these evil things come from inside, and defile the man.’

24 And getting up from there, he went off into the borders of Tyre and Sidon. And having entered into a house, he didn’t want anyone to know; but he couldn’t be hidden.

25 But then a woman who heard about him, whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, came and fell down at his feet.

26 Now the woman was Greek, a Syrophoenician by race. And she was asking him that he might throw the demon out of her daughter.

27 And he said to her, ‘Let the children be filled first: for it’s not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the puppies.’

28 But she answered and says to him, ‘Yes, Lord; but the puppies under the table are eating from the children's crumbs!’

29 And he said to her, ‘Because of this saying, go: the demon has gone out of your daughter.’

30 And she went to her house, and found the child laid upon the bed, and the demon gone out.

31 And again going out of the borders of Tyre, he came through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, through the middle of the borders of Decapolis.

32 And they bring to him one who was deaf, and had a speech impediment; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.

33 And taking him aside from the crowd to a private place, he put his fingers into his ears, and having spit, he touched his tongue;

34 and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and says to him, ‘Ephphatha’, that is, ‘Be opened’.

35 And his hearing was opened, and the bond of his tongue was loosened, and he was speaking properly.

36 And he charged them that they should tell no one: but the more he charged them, that much more they published it.

37 And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, ‘He has done all things well; he even makes the deaf to hear, and the mute to speak!’

Mark 8

1 In those days, when there was again a great crowd, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples over to him, and says to them,

2 I feel sorry for the crowd, because they are staying with me three days already, and have nothing to eat:

3 and if I let them go to their home fasting, they will faint on the way; and some of them are from far away.

4 And his disciples answered him, ‘From where could anyone fill these people with bread here in an isolated place?’

5 And he asked them, ‘How many loaves do YOU have?’ And they said, ‘Seven.’

6 And he instructed the crowd to get down on the ground: and taking the seven loaves, and having given thanks, he broke them, and gave to his disciples to put before them; and they put them before the crowd.

7 And they had a few small fish: and having given the blessing for them, he said to put these before them too.

8 And they ate, and were filled: and they picked up seven baskets of leftover broken pieces.

9 And they were about four thousand; and he let them go.

10 And then, getting into the boat with his disciples, he came into the parts of Dalmanutha.

11 And the Pharisees came out, and began to dispute with him, looking for a sign from heaven from him, testing him.

12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and says, ‘Why is this generation looking for a sign? Amen I’m saying, no sign will be given to this generation.’

13 And leaving them, he got in the boat again, and went over to the other side.

14 And they forgot to take bread, except for one loaf they had in the boat with them.

15 And he charged them, saying, ‘Watch out, look out for the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!’

16 And they were reasoning with one another, that they have no bread.

17 And knowing it, he says to them, ‘Why are YOU reasoning because YOU have no bread? YOU still don’t get it, or understand? Do YOU have YOUR heart dulled?

18 Having eyes, don’t YOU see? And having ears, don’t YOU hear? And don’t YOU remember

19 when I broke the five loaves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did YOU pick up?’ They say to him, ‘Twelve.’

20 ‘And when the seven among the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did YOU pick up?’ And they say to him, ‘Seven.’

21 And he said to them, ‘YOU still don’t understand?’

22 And they come into Bethsaida. And they bring to him a blind man, and beseech him to touch him.

23 And taking hold of the blind man by the hand, he brought him outside the village; and having spit into his eyes, and put his hands on him, he asked him, ‘Do you see anything?’

24 And he looked up, and said, ‘I’m looking at the men, because I see them like trees walking.’

25 Then he put his hands upon his eyes again; and he saw fully, and was restored, and saw all things clearly.

26 And he sent him to his home, saying, ‘But don’t enter into the village.’

27 And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the villages of Caesarea Philippi: and on the way he asked his disciples, saying to them, ‘Who are men saying I am?’

28 And they told him, saying, ‘John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.’

29 And he asked them, ‘But who do YOU say I am?’ Peter answered and says to him, ‘You are the Christ.’

30 And he charged them that they should tell no one about him.

31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, and the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days, rise again.

32 And he spoke the word openly. And Peter took him aside, and began to rebuke him.

33 But turning around, and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and says, ‘Get behind me, Satan, because you’re not concerned with the things of God, but the things of men!’

34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, ‘If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and pick up his cross, and follow me.

35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; but whoever will lose his life on account of me and the gospel will save it.

36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?

37 For what would a man give in exchange for his soul?

38 For whoever would be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of man will also be ashamed of him, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

Mark 9

1 And he said to them, ‘Amen I’m telling YOU, there are some of those standing here who will by no means taste of death, until they see the kingdom of God come in power.’

2 And after six days Jesus takes Peter, and James (Jacob), and John, and brings them up into a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured in front of them;

3 and his garments became glistening, exceedingly white, so much so that no cloth dresser on earth could whiten like that.

4 And Elijah appeared to them with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.

5 And Peter answered, saying to Jesus, ‘Rabbi, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tents: one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’

6 For he didn’t know what he should answer; for they became very afraid.

7 And there came a cloud overshadowing them: and there came a voice out of the cloud, ‘This is my beloved Son: hear him!’

8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone, except Jesus only.

9 And as they were going down out of the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no one what they saw, except when the Son of man had risen from the dead.

10 And they took the word, questioning among themselves what the rising from the dead is.

11 And they asked him, saying that ‘The scribes say that Elijah must come first.’

12 And he said to them, ‘Elijah indeed having come first, restores all things, and how it was written about the Son of man, that he should suffer many things and be treated as nothing.

13 But I’m telling YOU that Elijah has also come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, even as it was written about him.’

14 And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes disputing with them.

15 And then all the crowd, having seen him, were utterly astounded, and running toward him, they were greeting him.

16 And he asked them, ‘What are YOU disputing with them?’

17 And one from the crowd answered him, ‘Teacher, I brought my son who has a mute spirit to you,

18 and wherever it seizes him, it convulses him: and he foams, and grinds his teeth, and pines away: and I spoke to your disciples that they might throw it out; and they were not strong enough.’

19 And he answered them saying, ‘O faithless generation, how long will I be near YOU? How long will I put up with YOU? Bring him to me.’

20 And they brought him to him. And having seen him, the spirit immediately threw him into convulsions, and he fell on the ground, and rolled around, foaming.

21 And he asked his father, ‘How long has this been happening to him?’ And he said, ‘Since he was a little boy.

22 And many times it threw him both into fire and into water, to destroy him: but if you are able to do anything, have pity on us, and help us!’

23 And Jesus said to him, ‘If you are able!? All things are possible to the one having faith!’

24 At once the father of the child cried out, saying, ‘I have faith! Help my lack of faith!’

25 But when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, ‘Mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and don’t enter into him any more!’

26 And having cried out, and very much convulsed him, it came out: and he became as if dead; so that that most said that he died.

27 But Jesus, taking him by the hand, raised him up; and he stood.

28 And when he had come into a house, his disciples asked him privately, ‘Why couldn’t we throw it out?’

29 And he said to them, ‘This kind can come out by nothing, except by prayer.’

30 And going out from there, they were passing through Galilee; and he didn’t want anyone to know.

31 For he was teaching his disciples, and was saying to them, ‘The Son of man is being surrendered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise.’

32 But they didn’t understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.

33 And they came into Capernaum: and when he was in the house he asked them, ‘What were YOU reasoning on the way?’

34 But they were silent: for they had argued with one another on the way, who was greater.

35 And sitting down, he called the twelve, and says to them, ‘If anyone wants to be first, he will be last of all, and servant of all.’

36 And he took a little boy, and stood him in the midst of them: and taking him in his arms, he said to them,

37 Whoever receives one of the little children like this because of my name, receives me: and whoever receives me, isn’t receiving me, but the one who sent me.’

38 John said to him, ‘Teacher, we saw someone throwing out demons in your name; and we stopped him, because he wasn’t following us.’

39 But Jesus said, ‘Don’t stop him: for there is no one who will do a powerful work by my name, and quickly be able to speak evil of me.

40 For whoever is not against us, is for us.

41 For whoever gives YOU a cup of water to drink, because YOU are in the name of Christ, amen I’m telling YOU, he will by no means lose his reward.

42 And whoever causes one of these little ones who believe to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone such as is turned by a donkey were put around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea.

43 And if your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off: it is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire,

44 where their maggot doesn’t die and the fire isn’t quenched. (This verse is omitted in some manuscripts.)

45 And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off: it is better for you to enter into life lame, rather than having two feet to be thrown into Gehenna,

46 where their maggot doesn’t die and the fire isn’t quenched. (This verse is omitted in some manuscripts.)

47 And if your eye causes you to stumble, throw it out: it is better for you to enter into the kingdom of God one-eyed, rather than having two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna,

48 where their maggot doesn’t die and the fire isn’t quenched.

49 For everyone will be salted with fire.

50 Salt is good: but if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will YOU season it? Have salt in YOURSELVES, and keep peace with one another.’

Mark 10

1 And from there, he stood up and comes into the borders of Judea and the other side of the Jordan: and crowds again come together to him; and, as he was accustomed, he taught them again.

2 And Pharisees, having come to him, asked him, ‘Is it right for a man to divorce a woman?’ testing him.

3 But he answered and said to them, ‘What did Moses command YOU?’

4 And they said, ‘Moses permitted to write a scroll of separation, and to divorce.’

5 But Jesus said to them, “He wrote this commandment to YOU due to YOUR hardheartedness.

6 But from the beginning of the creation, ‘he made them male and female.

7 Because of this, a man will leave his father and mother,

8 and the two will be for one flesh;’ so that they are no longer two, but one flesh.

9 So what God yoked together, let man not put apart.”

10 And in the house the disciples asked him about this again.

11 And he says to them, ‘Whoever divorces his woman, and marries another, is committing adultery against her;

12 and if she, having divorced her man, marries another, she is committing adultery.’

13 And they were bringing little children to him, so that he might touch them: but the disciples rebuked them.

14 But Jesus, having seen it, was indignant, and said to them, ‘Let the little children come to me; don’t stop them: for the kingdom of God belongs to such.

15 Amen I’m telling YOU, whoever doesn’t receive the kingdom of God like a little child, will by no means enter into it.’

16 And taking them into his arms, he blessed them, putting his hands upon them.

17 And as he was going out into the road, one ran up to him, and falling on his knees to him, asked him, ‘Good Teacher, what shall I do so that I might inherit eternal life?’

18 And Jesus said to him, ‘Why are you calling me good? No one is good except one: God.

19 You know the commandments: Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’

20 And he said to him, Teacher, I kept all these things from my youth.’

21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, ‘One thing is lacking about you: go, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.’

22 But being saddened at the word, and he went away grieving: for he had many possessions.

23 And having looked around, Jesus says to his disciples, ‘With what difficulty will those having wealth enter into the kingdom of God!’

24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answered again, and says to them, ‘Children, how hard it is to enter into the kingdom of God!

25 It is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.’

26 And they were exceedingly astounded, saying to him, ‘And who can be saved?’

27 Jesus, looking at them, says, ‘With men it is impossible, but not with God: for all things are possible with God.’

28 Peter began to say to him, ‘Look, we’ve left everything, and have followed you.’

29 Jesus said, ‘Amen I’m telling YOU, there is no one who has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or mother, or father, or children, or lands, for my sake, and for the gospel's sake,

30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brothers, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the age to come, everlasting life.

31 But many first will be last; and the last first.’

32 And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus was going in front them: and they were astonished; and those following were afraid. And he took the twelve again, and began to tell them the things that were about to happen to him,

33 ‘Look, we’re going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn him to death, and will hand him over to the nations:

34 and they will mock him, and will spit on him, and shall whip him, and will kill him; and after three days he will rise.’

35 And James (Jacob) and John, the sons of Zebedee, go over to him, saying to him, ‘Teacher, we would like you to do for us whatever we ask you.’

36 And he said to them, ‘What do YOU want me to do for YOU?’

37 And they said to him, ‘Grant to us that we may sit, one on your right hand, and one on your left hand, in your glory.’

38 But Jesus said to them, ‘YOU don’t know what YOU’re asking for! Can YOU drink the cup that I am drinking? Or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?’

39 And they said to him, ‘We can.’ But Jesus said to them, ‘YOU will drink the cup that I’m drinking; and YOU will be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with:

40 but to sit on my right hand or left hand is not mine to give, but is for whom it has been prepared.’

41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant about James (Jacob) and John.

42 And Jesus called them to him, and says to them, ‘YOU know that those thinking to rule the nations lord it over them; and their great ones wield authority over them.

43 But it is not so among YOU: but whoever wants to become great among YOU, will be YOUR servant;

44 and whoever wants to be first among YOU, will be slave of all.

45 For the Son of man also didn’t come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.’

46 And they come into Jericho. And as he went out from Jericho, with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, that is, the son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting beside the road.

47 And having heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out, and say, ‘Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me!’

48 And many rebuked him, so that he would be quiet: but he cried out that much more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’

49 And Jesus, standing still, said, ‘Call him.’ And they call the blind man, saying to him, ‘Take courage: get up, he’s calling you!’

50 And he, throwing off his coat, jumped up, and came to Jesus.

51 And Jesus answered him, and said, ‘What do you want me to do to you?’ And the blind man said to him, ‘Rabboni, that I might see again!’

52 And Jesus said to him, Go; your faith has made you well.’ And at once he could see again, and was following him on the road.’

Mark 11

1 And when they got near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, by the Mount of Olives, he sends two of his disciples,

2 and says to them, “Go into the village that is across from YOU: and as soon as YOU go into it, YOU will find a colt tied up, on which no man ever sat yet; untie it, and bring it.

3 And if anyone says to YOU, ‘Why are YOU doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it’; and then he will send it back here.”

4 And they went off, and found a colt tied by the door outside in the intersection; and they were untying it.

5 And some of those standing there said to them, ‘What are YOU doing, untying the colt?’

6 And they said to them just as Jesus said, and they let them go.

7 And they bring the colt to Jesus, and throw their coats on it; and he sat on it.

8 And many spread their coats on the road; and others branches, which they had cut from the fields.

9 And those going ahead, and those following, were crying out, ‘Hosanna (Hebrew: Hosha na - please save)! Blessed is the one coming in the name of the Lord!

10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest.’

11 And he entered into Jerusalem, into the temple; and having looked around at all things, the hour being already late, he went out into Bethany with the twelve.

12 And on the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, he became hungry.

13 And seeing a fig tree having leaves from afar off, he came, if perhaps he might find anything on it: and coming to it, he found nothing but leaves; for it was not the season of figs.

14 And he answered and said to it, ‘Let no one eat fruit from you anymore for ever!’ And his disciples heard.

15 And they come to Jerusalem: and having entered into the temple, and began to eject those selling and those buying in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those selling the doves;

16 and he wouldn’t allow anyone to carry equipment through the temple.

17 And he was teaching, and saying, “Isn’t it written, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But YOU have made it a den of robbers!’

18 And the chief priests and the scribes heard, and sought how they might destroy him: for they were afraid of him, for all the crowd was astounded by his teaching.

19 And when it got late they went out of the city.

20 And coming by early in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away from the roots.

21 And Peter, remembering, says to him, ‘Rabbi, see, the fig tree which you cursed has withered away!’

22 And Jesus, answering, says to them, “Have faith in God.

23 Amen I’m telling YOU, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea’; and doesn’t doubt in his heart, but believes that what he is saying is happening; it will be for him.

24 Because of this, I’m telling YOU, all things whatever YOU pray and ask, believe that YOU received, and it will be for YOU.

25 And whenever YOU stand praying, forgive, if YOU have anything against someone; so that YOUR Father who is in heaven might also forgive YOU YOUR trespasses.

26 But if YOU don’t forgive, neither will YOUR Father who is in heaven forgive YOUR trespasses.” (This verse is omitted in some manuscripts.)

27 And they come again into Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders come over to him,

28 and they said to him, ‘By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do these things?’

29 But Jesus said to them, ‘I will ask YOU one thing, and answer me, and I will tell YOU by what authority I’m doing these things:

30 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men? Answer me.’

31 And they were reasoning with themselves, saying, “If we shall say, ‘From heaven’, he will say, ‘Then why didn’t YOU believe him?’

32 But if we say, ‘From men…’” They feared the crowd: for all held John to really be a prophet.

33 And they answered Jesus and say, ‘We don’t know.’ And Jesus says to them, ‘Neither am I telling YOU by what authority I’m doing these things.’

Mark 12

1 And he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard, and put a fence around it, and dug a pit for the wine vat, and built a tower, and leased to farmers, and traveled abroad.

2 And at the appointed time, he sent a slave to the farmers, so that he might take some of the fruits of the vineyard from the farmers.

3 And they took him, and beat him, and sent him away empty.

4 And again he sent another slave to them; and they hit him on the head, and dishonored him.

5 And he sent another; and they killed that one: and many others; beating some, and killing some.

6 He still had one, a beloved son: he sent him to them last, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’

7 But those farmers said among themselves, ‘This is the heir; come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!’

8 And taking him, they killed him, and threw him outside the vineyard.

9 What will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the farmers, and will give the vineyard to others.

10 Haven’t YOU read this scripture: ‘The stone which the builders rejected, this came to be the head of the corner;

11 This came from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes?’”

12 And they sought to seize him; and they feared the crowd; for they knew that he spoke the parable against them: and letting him go, they went away.

13 And they send to him some of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, so that they might catch him on some word.

14 And having come, they say to him, ‘Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and it doesn’t matter to you who it is about, for you don’t look at the outward appearance of men, but teach the way of God in truth: Is it right to give tax to Caesar, or not?

15 Should we give, or should we not give?’ But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, ‘Why are YOU testing me? Bring me a denarius, so that I might see it.’

16 And they brought one. And he says to them, ‘Whose image and inscription is this?’ And they said to him, ‘Caesar's.’

17 And Jesus said to them, ‘Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.’ And they wondered about him.

18 And Sadducees come over to him, who say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,

19 ‘Teacher, Moses wrote to us, If a anyone's brother dies, and leaves behind a woman, and doesn’t leave a child, that his brother should take the woman, and raise up seed for his brother.

20 There were seven brothers: and the first took a woman, and dying, left no seed;

21 and the second took her, and died, leaving behind no seed; and the third likewise:

22 and the seven left no seed. Last of all, the woman also died.

23 In the resurrection whose woman will she be of them? For the seven had her as their woman.’

24 Jesus said to them, “Isn’t it because YOU don’t know the scriptures, nor the power of God, that YOU are mistaken?

25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as angels in heaven.

26 But about the dead, that they are raised: Didn’t YOU read in the book of Moses, how God spoke to him at the bush, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?

27 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. YOU are greatly mistaken.”

28 And one of the scribes came, and heard them questioning together, and knowing that he answered them well, asked him, ‘Which is the first commandment of all?’

29 Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel; The Lord is our God, the Lord is one:

30 and you shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, and with your whole soul, and with your whole mind, and with your whole strength.’

31 The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

32 And the scribe said to him, ‘In truth, Teacher, you have well said that he is one; and there is no other beside him:

33 and to love him with the whole heart, and with the whole understanding, and with the whole strength, and to love the neighbor as oneself, is much more than all the whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices.’

34 And Jesus, having seen that he answered wisely, said to him, ‘You are not far from the kingdom of God.’ And no one dared to ask him anything more.

35 And Jesus answered and said, as he was teaching in the temple, “How do the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?

36 David himself said in the Holy Spirit, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.’

37 David himself calls him Lord; and from where is it that he is his son?” And the great crowd was hearing him with pleasure.

38 And in his teaching he said, ‘Look out for the scribes, who want to walk around in long robes, and want greetings in the marketplaces,

39 and front seats in the synagogues, and best places at dinners:

40 those devouring widows' houses, and praying long for a pretence; these will receive much more condemnation.’

41 And sitting down opposite the temple treasury, he was watching how the crowd throws coins into the treasury: and many rich were throwing in many coins.

42 And one poor widow came, and threw in two small coins, which equal a quadrans (a quarter of a larger unit of money).

43 And he called his disciples over to him, and said to them, ‘Amen I’m telling YOU, this poor widow threw in more than all those throwing into the treasury:

44 for they all threw in out of their abundance; but she, out of her want, threw in all that she had, her whole living.

Mark 13

1 And as he was going out of the temple, one of his disciples says to him, ‘Teacher, see what kind of stones and what kind of buildings!’

2 And Jesus said to him, ‘You see these great buildings? There will not be left here a stone upon a stone, which won’t be thrown down.’

3 And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James (Jacob) and John and Andrew asked him privately,

4 ‘Tell us when these things will be. And what will be the sign when these things are all to be finished?’

5 And Jesus began to say to them, “Watch out so no one misleads YOU.

6 Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am’ and will mislead many.

7 But when YOU hear wars and reports of wars, don’t be afraid: it must happen; but the end is not yet.

8 For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes from place to place; there will be famines: these are the beginning of labor pains.

9 But watch out for YOURSELVES: for they will hand YOU over to religious councils; and YOU will be beaten in synagogues; and YOU will be made to stand before governors and kings because of me, as a witness to them.

10 And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations.

11 And when they lead YOU to hand YOU over, do not worry beforehand what YOU should say: but say whatever is given to YOU in that hour, for YOU are not the ones speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

12 And brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents, and will put them to death.

13 And YOU will be hated by all for my name's sake: but the one who has endured to the end, this one will be saved.

14 But when YOU see the abomination of desolation standing where he should not --let the one reading understand--, then let those in Judea flee into the mountains:

15 and let the one on the housetop not go down, nor enter in, to take anything out his house:

16 and let the one in the field not turn back to pick up his coat.

17 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those nursing in those days!

18 And pray that it not happen in winter.

19 For those days will be tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will be again.

20 And unless the Lord shortened the days, no flesh would have been saved. But for the sake of the chosen ones, whom he chose, he shortened the days.

21 And then if anyone says to YOU, ‘See, here is the Christ’ or, ‘See, there’, don’t believe it:

22 for false Christs and false prophets will arise, and will grant signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, the chosen ones.

23 So YOU watch out: I have told YOU everything beforehand.

24 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its brilliance,

25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken.

26 And then they will see the Son of man coming in clouds with great power and glory.

27 And then he will send out the angels, and will gather together his chosen ones out of the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.

28 But learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender, and puts out the leaves, YOU know that the summer is near;

29 so YOU also, when YOU see these things happening, YOU know that he is near, at the doors.

30 Amen I’m telling YOU, this generation will by no means pass away, until all these things happen.

31 Heaven and earth will pass away: but my words will not pass away.

32 But no one knows about that day or the hour, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father.

33 Watch out, stay awake: for YOU don’t know when the time is:

34 Like a man gone abroad, having left his house, and given authority to his slaves, to each one his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to stay awake.

35 So stay awake: for YOU don’t know when the Lord of the house is coming, whether late in the day, or midnight, or at the rooster’s crowing, or early in the morning;

36 so that coming suddenly he not find YOU sleeping.

37 But what I’m saying to YOU, I’m saying to all: ‘Stay awake!’”

Mark 14

1 Now after two days was the Passover and the unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him with trickery, and kill him:

2 for they said, ‘Not during the feast, so there won’t be an uproar of the people.’

3 And while he was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he reclined at the table, a woman came, having an alabaster box of perfumed oil, real nard, very expensive. Breaking the alabaster box, she poured it on his head.

4 But some were expressing indignation among themselves: ‘Why has this waste of the perfumed oil taken place?

5 For this perfumed oil could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and given to the poor.’ And they were indignant against her.

6 But Jesus said, ‘Let her be; why are YOU making trouble for her? She has done a good work for me.

7 For YOU always have the poor with YOU, and whenever YOU want, YOU can do good for them: but YOU don’t always have me.

8 She did what she could: She came ahead of time to anoint my body for burial.

9 And amen I’m telling YOU, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the whole world, what this woman did will also be told as a remembrance of her.’

10 And Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests, so that he might hand him over to them.

11 And they, hearing it, rejoiced, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently hand him over.

12 And on the first day of unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the Passover, his disciples say to him, ‘Where do you want us to go and prepare so that you may eat the Passover?’

13 And he sends two of his disciples, and says to them, “Go into the city, and YOU will meet a man carrying an earthenware pitcher of water. Follow him,

14 and wherever he enters, say to the householder, ‘The Teacher says, <<Where is my guestroom, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?>>’

15 And he will show YOU a large furnished upper room, ready, and prepare for us there.”

16 And the disciples went, and came into the city, and found as he had said to them: and they prepared the Passover.

17 And when it was evening, he comes with the twelve.

18 And as they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, ‘Amen I’m telling YOU, one of YOU will betray me, one eating with me.’

19 They began to be sad, and to say to him one by one, ‘Is it I?’

20 And he said to them, ‘One of the twelve, who is dipping with me in the bowl.

21 The Son of man indeed is going away, just as it was written about him: but woe to that man through whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had not been born!’

22 And as they were eating, he took bread, and having blessed, he broke it, and gave to them, and said, ‘Take: this is my body.’

23 And taking a cup, and having given thanks, he gave to them: and they all drank out of it.

24 And he said to them, ‘This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.

25 Amen I’m telling YOU, I will by no means drink of the fruit of the vine again, until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.’

26 And having sung hymns, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

27 And Jesus says to them, “YOU will all be stumbled: because it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’

28 But after I am raised up, I will go ahead of YOU into Galilee.”

29 But Peter said to him, ‘Even if they will all be stumbled, I won’t!’

30 And Jesus says to him, ‘Amen I’m telling you, that you today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, will deny me three times.’

31 But he was saying profusely, ‘If I must die with you, I will not deny you!’ And they all said so, too.

32 And they come to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he says to his disciples, ‘Sit here, while I pray.’

33 And he takes Peter and James (Jacob) and John with him, and began to be in a state of shock, and in distress.

34 And he says to them, ‘My soul is extremely grieved, even to death: remain here, and stay awake.’

35 And going forward a little, he fell on the ground, and was praying that, if possible, the hour might pass away from him.

36 And he said, ‘Abba, Father, all things are possible to you; remove this cup from me: nevertheless, not what I want, but what you do.’

37 And he comes, and finds them sleeping, and says to Peter, ‘Simon, are you sleeping? Weren’t you strong enough to stay awake one hour?

38 Stay awake and pray, so that YOU don’t come into temptation: the spirit indeed is eager, but the flesh is weak.’

39 And having gone off again, he prayed, saying the same words.

40 And again he came, and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy; and they didn’t know what to answer him.

41 And he comes the third time, and says to them, ‘You’re still sleeping and resting! That’s enough: the hour has come! Look, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners!

42 Get up, let us be going. Look, the one betraying me has come near.’

43 And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, approaches, and with him a crowd with swords and sticks, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

44 Now the one betraying him had given them an agreed-upon signal, saying, ‘Whomever I kiss, that is he; seize him, and lead him away safely.’

45 And when he got there, he at once came over to him, and says, ‘Rabbi’; and kissed him.

46 And they laid hands on him, and seized him.

47 But a certain one of those standing by, drawing his sword, hit the servant of the high priest, and took off his ear.

48 And Jesus answered and said to them, ‘YOU came out with swords and sticks to arrest me, as against a robber?

49 Day by day I was by YOU teaching in the temple, and YOU didn’t seize me: but so that the scriptures might be fulfilled…’

50 And they all left him, and fled.

51 And a certain young man was following with him, having a bleached linen garment thrown about him, over his naked body: and they seize him;

52 but leaving behind the bleached linen garment, he fled naked.

53 And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and him all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes come together.

54 And Peter had followed him a long way off, as far as inside the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the officers, and warming himself by the fire light.

55 Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for a witness against Jesus to put him to death; and weren’t finding it.

56 For many were giving false testimony against him, and the testimonies weren’t the same.

57 And some, having stood up, and were giving false testimony against him, saying,

58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another not made with hands.’”

59 And their testimony wasn’t the same on this, either.

60 And the high priest, standing up in the midst, asked Jesus, saying, ‘Aren’t you answering anything? What are these testifying against you?’

61 But he was silent, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and says to him, ‘Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?’

62 And Jesus said, ‘I am. And YOU will see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of the power, and coming with the clouds of heaven!’

63 And the high priest, tearing his clothes, says, ‘What further need do we have of witnesses?

64 YOU heard the blasphemy? What do YOU think?’ And they all condemned him to be subject to death.

65 And some started to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to hit him, and to say to him, ‘Prophesy!’ and the officers took him, slapping his face.

66 And while Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servants of the high priest comes;

67 and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him, and says, ‘You were also with the Nazarene, Jesus!’

68 But he denied, saying, ‘I neither know, nor understand what you’re saying.’ And he went outside to the fore-court. (Some manuscripts add “and the rooster crowed.”)

69 And the servant, having seen him, again began to say to those standing by, ‘This is one of them.’

70 But he again was denying it. And after a bit, those standing by said to Peter again, ‘You are truthfully one of them; for you are also a Galilean.’

71 But he started cursing and swearing, ‘I don’t know this man of whom YOU’re speaking!’

72 And at once the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter recalled the saying, how Jesus said to him, ‘Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.’ And having thought of it, he was weeping.

Mark 15

1 And right away early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin, held a consultation, and bound Jesus, and brought him away, and handed him over to Pilate.

2 And Pilate asked him, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’ But he, answering, says to him, ‘You’re saying it.’

3 And the chief priests were accusing him of many things.

4 And Pilate asked him again, saying, ‘Are you answering nothing? See how many things they’re accusing you of!?’

5 But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate wondered.

6 Now at the feast he used to release one prisoner to them, whom they asked for.

7 And there was one called Barabbas, bound with the insurrectionists, who in the insurrection had committed murder.

8 And the crowd came up and began to ask for what was used to doing for them.

9 And Pilate answered them, saying, ‘Do YOU want me to release the King of the Jews to YOU?’

10 For he knew that the chief priests had handed him over through envy.

11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he would release Barabbas to them instead.

12 And Pilate again answered and said to them, ‘So then what should I do with him whom YOU call the King of the Jews?’

13 And they cried out again, ‘Crucify him!’

14 And Pilate said to them, ‘What evil did he do?’ But they cried out even more, ‘Crucify him!’

15 And Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them, and having whipped Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified.

16 And the soldiers led him inside the courtyard, which is the Praetorium; and they call together the whole squadron.

17 And they clothe him in purple, and having braided a thorny crown, they put it on him;

18 and they began to greet him, ‘Hello, King of the Jews!’

19 And they were hitting his head with a reed, and were spitting on him, and bending their knees, worshipped him.

20 And when they had mocked him, they stripped the purple off him, and put his own garments on him. And they lead him out to crucify him.

21 And they pressed a passer-by into service, a certain Simon, a Cyrenian coming from the field, the father of Alexander and Rufus, so that he would carry his cross.

22 And they bring him to the place Golgotha, which is, being translated, ‘the place of a skull’.

23 And they were giving him wine mixed with myrrh, but he didn’t take it.

24 And they crucify him, and distribute his garments, throwing dice them, to determine who takes what.
