A New Translation of
The Gospel
according to
Luke
Based on the Westcott and Hort Text of 1881 with references to the Papyrus fragments of the Chester Beatty collections, c. 3rd Century A.D. and the Sinaitic Manuscript of the 4th Century.
Some notes on this translation:
Thou vs. YOU: Many people today have a hard time understanding the Elizabethan usage of thou, thee, thy, etc. For this reason, we have chosen to avoid this archaic language. At the same time, we need to be able to fulfill the purpose of those words, which was to distinguish between a singular you and a plural YOU. Following the example of other translations, we have used all capital letters to indicate plural (more than one person addressed), and small letters to indicate singular (one person addressed).
Words in italics: Following the example of other translations, we have used italics for words that are not in the original text, but which are essential to the sense of the original when translated into English. Unlike other translations, however, we have NOT added words which alter the meaning of the original.
Words in (parentheses): These are not part of the biblical text, but are notes of explanation from the translator.
Man and Woman vs. Husband and Wife: Greek has no specific words for husband or wife, but uses the words man and woman, as do many other languages. We have translated the words man and woman as such, but in proper context, the readers should understand them to mean husband and wife.
Perfect vs. Complete: Many English versions use the word “perfect” both as a verb and as an adjective, to translate a particular Greek root. We have also used it occasionally, but it should be understood as perfect in the sense of “complete” and not in the sense of “without flaw.”
Luke 1
1 Since many have taken in hand to put together an account concerning the affairs that have been fully carried out among us,
2 just as those who were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word from the beginning delivered them to us,
3 it seemed good to me also, having traced all things accurately from the first, to write them in order to you, most excellent Theophilus;
4 so that you might know the certainty about the words which you were taught.
5 There was in the days of Herod, king of Judea, a certain priest named Zechariah, from Abijah’s work schedule: and he had a woman from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
6 And they were both righteous before God, walking blameless in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord.
7 And they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both of them were advanced in age.
8 But it happened, while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his work schedule,
9 according to the custom of the priest's office, he drew by lot the task of entering into the temple of the Lord to offer incense.
10 And all the multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.
11 And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.
13 But the angel said to him, ‘Don’t be afraid, Zechariah: because your supplication was heard, and your woman Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will call his name John.
14 And you will have joy and great exultation; and many will rejoice at his birth,
15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will by no means drink wine or liquor; and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit right from his mother's womb.
16 And he will turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God.
17 And he will go ahead of him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient back to the wisdom of the righteous, to get a fully prepared people ready for the Lord.’
18 And Zechariah said to the angel, ‘How will I know this? For I am old, and my woman is advanced in her age.’
19 And the angel answering said to him, ‘I am Gabriel, who stands before God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to tell you this good news!
20 And look, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day these things take place, because you didn’t believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their appointed time!’
21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and were wondering at his delaying in the temple.
22 But when he came out, he wasn’t able to speak to them: and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple: and he was making signs to them, and remained mute.
23 And it happened, when the days of his ministry were fulfilled, he went to his house.
24 And after these days his woman Elizabeth conceived; and she secluded herself five months, saying,
25 ‘The Lord has done this for me in the days when he looked upon me, to take away my reproach among men.’
26 Now in her sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 And he came in to her, and said, ‘Hello, you who are highly favored, the Lord is with you!’
29 But she was very disturbed by the words, and was trying to figure out what kind of greeting this might be.
30 And the angel said to her, ‘Don’t be afraid, Mary: for you found favor with God.
31 And look, you will conceive in your womb, and give birth to a son, and will call his name Jesus.
32 He shall be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David:
33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and there will be no end of his kingdom.’
34 But Mary said to the angel, ‘How will this be, since I don’t know a man?’
35 And the angel answered and said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you: and so what is born will be called holy, the Son of God.
36 And look, your relative Elizabeth has herself also conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren,
37 because no utterance from God will be impossible.’
38 And Mary said, ‘Look, the slave of the Lord; may it happen to me according to your word.’ And the angel departed from her.
39 And Mary got up in these days and went into the highlands with haste, into a city of Judah;
40 and entered into the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
41 And it happened, when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit;
42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, and said, ‘You are blessed among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
43 And from where is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For look, when the sound of your greeting came into my ears, the infant leaped for joy in my womb!
45 And blessed is she who believed; because there will be a completion of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord!’
46 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 And my spirit has leaped for joy because of God my Savior,
48 because he has looked upon the low estate of his slave: For look, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49 because the powerful One did great things for me; and his name is holy.
50 And his mercy is to generations and generations to those fearing him.
51 He has exercised might with his arm; he scattered the haughty in the deep thoughts of their heart.
52 He took rulers down from thrones, and exalted the lowly.
53 He filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.
54 He supported his servant Israel, to remember mercy,
55 as he said to our fathers ‘to Abraham and his seed forever.’”
56 And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her house.
57 Now Elizabeth's time was fulfilled to deliver; and she gave birth to a son.
58 And her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy with her; and they rejoiced with her.
59 And it happened on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the little boy; and they were calling him by the name of his father, Zechariah.
60 And his mother answered and said, ‘No, but he will be called John.’
61 And they said to her, ‘No one among your relatives is called by this name.’
62 And they were nodding to his father, what he wanted him to be called.
63 And having asked for a writing tablet, he wrote, saying, ‘John is his name.’ And they all wondered.
64 And his mouth was instantly opened, and his tongue, and he was speaking, blessing God.
65 And fear came on all those living around them: and all these sayings were told abroad through all the Judean highlands.
66 And all those who heard put it in their heart, saying, ‘So what will this little boy be?’ For the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,
68 ‘Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has looked upon and made redemption (literally, “a ransoming”) for his people,
69 and raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David
70 just as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
71 salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of those who hate us;
72 to show mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant,
73 the oath which he swore to our father Abraham,
74 to grant to us, being rescued out of the hand of our enemies, to serve him fearlessly,
75 In piety and righteousness in his sight all our days.
76 But you, little boy, will be also called a prophet of the Most High: For you will go ahead of the Lord to prepare his ways;
77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in forgiveness of their sins,
78 through the compassions of our God’s mercy, with which the rising of light from on high will look upon us,
79 to shine upon those sitting in darkness and the shadow of death; to direct our feet into the way of peace.’
80 And the little boy was growing, and becoming mighty in spirit, and was in the deserts until the day of his showing to Israel.
Luke 2
1 Now it happened in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that all the world be enrolled. (i.e., a census)
2 This first enrollment took place when Quirinius was governor of Syria.
3 And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city.
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,
5 to be enrolled with Mary, who was engaged to him, being pregnant.
6 But it happened while they were there, the days were fulfilled for her to give birth.
7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she swaddled him, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 And there were shepherds in the same country, living in the fields, and keeping the night watches over their flock.
9 And an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them: and they were very much afraid.
10 And the angel said to them, ‘Don’t be afraid, for look, I’m telling YOU good news of great joy which will be to all the people:
11 because a Savior was born to YOU today in the city of David, who is Christ the Lord!
12 And this will be a sign to YOU: YOU will find an infant, swaddled, and lying in a manger.’
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men of good will!’
15 And it happened, when the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘So let’s go to Bethlehem, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord made known to us.’
16 And they came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger.
17 And when they had seen, they made known about the saying which was spoken to them about this little boy.
18 And all who heard it wondered about the things which were told to them by the shepherds.
19 But Mary was keeping all these sayings, considering them in her heart.
20 And the shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all they heard and saw, just as it was told to them.
21 And when eight days were fulfilled for circumcising him, his name was called Jesus, the name called by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
22 And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord
23 –just as it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every male opening the womb will be called holy to the Lord’--,
24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what had been said in the law of the Lord, ‘A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.’
25 And look, a man was in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and pious, looking for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
26 And it was revealed to him by the Holy Spirit, that he would not see death before he would see the Lord's Christ.
27 And he came into the temple in the Spirit: and when the parents brought in the little boy Jesus, to do according to the custom of the law concerning him,
28 he also received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,
29 ‘Now you are letting your slave go, Master, according to your word, in peace;
30 because my eyes saw your salvation,
31 which you prepared before the face of all peoples:
32 a light for revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel.’
33 And his father and mother were wondering about the things being said about him.
34 And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother, ‘Look, this one is appointed for the fall and the rise of many in Israel; and for a sign being spoken against;
35 and a sword will pierce through your own soul, so that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.’
36 And there was Anna, a prophetess, daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher: she was well advanced in age, having lived with a man seven years from her virginity,
37 and she had been a widow for eighty four years, who was never absent from the temple, worshipping with fastings and supplications night and day.
38 And coming up at that very hour she was giving thanks to God, and was talking about him to all those awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.
39 And when they finished all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their city Nazareth.
40 And the little boy was growing, and was getting strong, being filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
41 And his parents went to Jerusalem every year for the feast of the Passover.
42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to the custom of the feast;
43 and having finished the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem: and his parents didn’t know.
44 But assuming him to be in the company, they went a day's journey; and were looking for him among the relatives and acquaintances:
45 and not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for him.
46 And it happened after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both hearing them, and questioning them.
47 and all those hearing him were amazed at his understanding and answers.
48 And having seen him, they were astounded; and his mother said to him, ‘Child, why did you do this to us? Look, your father and I are looking for you grieving.’
49 And he said to them, ‘Why is it that YOU were looking for me? Didn’t YOU know that I must be about my Father's affairs?’
50 And they didn’t understand the saying which he said to them.
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth; and he was subject to them. And his mother was keeping all the sayings in her heart.
52 And Jesus was advancing in wisdom and maturity, and in favor with God and men.
Luke 3
1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip being tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias being tetrarch of Abilene,
2 in the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the utterance of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.
3 And he came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance into forgiveness of sins;
4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, ‘A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight:
5 Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be made low, and the crooked will become straight, and the rough ways smooth;
6 and all flesh will see the salvation of God.’
7 So he was saying to the crowds going out to be baptized by him, “Offspring of vipers, who warned YOU to flee from the coming wrath?
8 Then produce fruits worthy of repentance, and don’t start saying within YOURSELVES, ‘We have Abraham for our father’ for I’m telling YOU that God is able to raise up children for Abraham out of these stones.
9 And also, the axe is already lying at the root of the trees: so every tree not producing good fruit is being cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10 And the crowds were asking him, saying, ‘Then what should we do?’
11 And he answered and said to them, ‘Whoever has two coats, let him share with the one having none; and the one having food, let him do likewise.’
12 And tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, ‘Teacher, what should we do?’
13 And he said to them, ‘Don’t collect more than what is appointed for YOU.’
14 And soldiers also asked him, saying, ‘And what should we do?’ And he said to them, ‘You shouldn’t be violent, or accuse anyone wrongfully; and be satisfied with YOUR rations.’
15 But as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether he might be the Christ;
16 John answered, saying to all, ‘I indeed am baptizing YOU with water; but one is coming, stronger than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie: he will baptize YOU in the Holy Spirit and fire:
17 whose winnowing fork is in his hand, to thoroughly clean his threshing-floor, and to gather the wheat into his granary; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.’
18 So he preached good news to the people with many other exhortations;
19 but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him about Herodias, his brother's woman, and about all the evil deeds which Herod had done,
20 also added this to all his deeds: he locked John up in prison.
21 Now it happened, when all the people were baptized, that, Jesus also having been baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
22 and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form, like a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, ‘You are my beloved Son: I am well pleased in you.’
23 And Jesus himself began about thirty years of age, being the son, as was supposed, of Joseph, the son-in-law of Heli,
24 the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
25 the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai,
26 the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda,
27 the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri,
28 the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er,
29 the son of Jesus, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi,
30 the son of Symeon, the son of Judas, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim,
31 the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David,
32 the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon,
33 the son of Amminadab, the son of Arni, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah,
34 the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,
35 the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah,
36 the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,
37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan,
38 the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.
Luke 4
1 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led in the Spirit in the wilderness
2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing in those days: and when they were completed, he was hungry.
3 But the devil said to him, ‘If you’re the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.’
4 And Jesus answered to him, “It is written, ‘Man will not live by bread alone.’”
5 And bringing him up, he showed him all the kingdoms of the world in an instant of time.
6 And the devil said to him, ‘I will give all this authority and their glory to you: because it has been given to me, and I’m giving it to whomever I want.
7 So if you worship before me, it will all be yours.’
8 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is written, ‘You will worship the Lord your God, and you will serve only him.’”
9 And he led him to Jerusalem, and put him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you’re the Son of God, throw yourself down from here:
10 for it is written, ‘He will give his angels charge concerning you, to guard you’
11 and, ‘They will lift you up on their hands, so that you never strike your foot against a stone.’”
12 And Jesus answering said to him, “It has been said, ‘You will not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
13 And having concluded all temptation, the devil went away from him until another time.
14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee. And report about him went out through the whole surrounding region.
15 And he was teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and he entered, as his custom was, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.
17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. And having opened the scroll, he found the place where it was written,
18 ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he anointed me to preach good news to the poor: He has sent me to preach release to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to send off in release those who are crushed,
19 to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.’
20 And having rolled up the scroll and given it back to the attendant, he sat down: and the eyes of all in the synagogue were looking intently at him.
21 And he began to say to them, ‘Today this scripture has been fulfilled in YOUR ears.’
22 And all were testifying about him, and were wondering at the words of grace coming out of his mouth, and were saying, ‘Isn’t this Joseph's son?’
23 And he said to them, “Undoubtedly, YOU will say this parable to me, ‘Physician, heal yourself: do here also in your own country what we heard happened in Capernaum.’”
24 And he said, ‘Amen I’m telling YOU, no prophet is acceptable in his own country.
25 But in truth I’m telling YOU, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when a great famine was over all the land;
26 and was Elijah sent to none of them, but to a widow woman in Zarephath, in the land of Sidon.
27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, but Naaman the Syrian.”
28 And all were all filled with anger in the synagogue, hearing these things;
29 and getting up, they threw him out of the city, and brought him to the brow of the mountain upon which their city had been built, in order to throw him down headlong.
30 But he, going through the midst of them, went on his way.
31 And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath:
32 and they were being astounded at his teaching, because his word was with authority.
33 And in the synagogue was a man having a spirit of an unclean demon; and he shouted with a loud voice,
34 ‘Ah! What do we have to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Did you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God!’
35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Shut up and come out of him!’ (Shut up: literally “be muzzled,” a cultural equivalent of “shut up.”) And the demon, having thrown him into the midst, came out of him, without hurting him.
36 And astonishment came upon all, and they were talking to one another together, saying, ‘What is this word, because he gives orders to the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out?’
37 And a buzz was going around about him into every place of the surrounding region.
38 And he got up from the synagogue, and entered into the house of Simon. And Simon's mother-in-law was afflicted with a high fever; and they made request of him about her.
39 And standing over her, he rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she stood up and was serving them.
40 And when the sun was setting, all those who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him; and putting his hands on each one of them, he was healing them.
41 And demons were also coming out from many, crying out, and saying, ‘You’re the Son of God!’ And rebuking them, he wasn’t permitting them to speak, because they knew him to be the Christ.
42 But when it was day, he went out and went into a private place: and the crowds were looking for him, and they came to him, and were detaining him, that he not go away from them.
43 But he said to them, ‘I must also preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities, because this is why was I sent.’
44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee (some manuscripts say “Judea”).
Luke 5
1 Now it happened, while the crowd pressed against him and heard the word of God, that he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret;
2 and he saw two boats standing by the lake: but the fishermen, having gotten out of them, were washing their nets.
3 And he stepped into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And having sat down, he taught the crowds from the boat.
4 But when he stopped speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Put out into the deep, and lower YOUR nets for a catch.’
5 And Simon answered and said, ‘Master, working all night, we took nothing: but at your word I will lower the nets.’
6 And having done this, they enclosed a great multitude of fish; and their nets were breaking;
7 and they motioned to their partners in the other boat, to come help them. And they came, and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.
8 But Simon Peter, having seen this, fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, ‘Go away from me, because I’m a sinful man, Lord.’
9 For astonishment overwhelmed him, and all those with him, at the catch of fish which they took;
10 and likewise also James (Jacob) and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, ‘Don’t be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.’
11 And having brought their boats to land, they left all, and followed him.
12 And it happened, while he was in one of the cities, look, a man full of leprosy: and having seen Jesus and fallen on his face, he begged him, saying, ‘Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean.’
13 And stretching out his hand, he touched him, saying, ‘I do want to. Be made clean!’ And immediately the leprosy went away from him.
14 And he charged him to tell no one: ‘but go show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.’
15 But the report about him was going around even more: and great crowds were coming together to hear, and to be healed of their sicknesses.
16 But he would retire in the solitary places, and pray.
17 And it happened one day he was teaching; and Pharisees and doctors of the law were sitting there, who had come out of every village of Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was there for him to heal.
18 And look: men carrying a paralyzed man on a bed: and they were seeking to bring him in, and to put him in his sight.
19 And not finding any way that they might bring him in because of the crowd, they went up onto the roof, and let him down through the tiles with his cot into the midst in front of Jesus.
20 And having seen their faith, he said, ‘Man, your sins have been forgiven you.’
21 And the scribes and the Pharisees started reasoning, saying, ‘Who is this who is speaking blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?’
22 But Jesus, perceiving their reasonings, answered and said to them, “Why are YOU reasoning in YOUR hearts?
23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins have been forgiven you’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk?’
24 But so that YOU might know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins --he said to the paralytic--, ‘I’m telling you, get up, and picking up your cot, go to your house.’”
25 And having instantly stood up in their sight, and having picked up what he was lying on, he went to his house, glorifying God.
26 And bewilderment took hold of all, and they were glorifying God, and were filled with fear, saying, ‘We saw strange things today!’
27 And after these things he went out, and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office, and said to him, ‘Follow me.’
28 And leaving everything behind, and standing up, he followed him.
29 And Levi made him a great feast in his house: and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and of others who were with them reclining at the table.
30 And the Pharisees and their scribes were murmuring to his disciples, saying, ‘Why are YOU eating and drinking with the tax collectors and sinners?’
31 And Jesus, answering, said to them, ‘The healthy have no need of a physician; but those who are ill.
32 I haven’t come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.’
33 But they said to him, ‘The disciples of John fast often, and make supplications; likewise also those of the Pharisees; but yours eat and drink.’
34 And Jesus said to them, ‘Can YOU make the sons of the bride-chamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?
35 But days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.’
36 But he also told them a parable: “No one having torn a patch from a new garment puts it on an old garment; but if he does, the new patch will also tear away, and the patch from the new will not match the old.
37 And no one puts new wine into old wine-skins; but if he does, the new wine will burst the wine-skins and will be spilled out, and the wine-skins will be ruined.
38 But new wine must be put into fresh wine-skins.
39 No one having drunk old wine wants new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’”
Luke 6
1 Now it happened on a Sabbath, that he was going through the planted fields; and his disciples were plucking and eating the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands.
2 But some of the Pharisees said, ‘Why are YOU doing what it isn’t right to do on the Sabbath?’
3 And Jesus, answering them, said, ‘But didn’t YOU read this, what David did, when he was hungry, he, and those with him;
4 how he entered into the house of God, and taking the showbread, ate and gave to those with him; which it’s not right to eat, except for the priests alone?’
5 And he said to them, ‘The Son of man is Lord of the Sabbath.’
6 Now it happened on another Sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and a man was there, and his right hand was withered.
7 And the scribes and the Pharisees were watching him, whether he would heal on the Sabbath; so that they might find means to accuse him.
8 But he knew their thoughts and said to the man having the withered hand, ‘Get up, and stand in the middle.’ And he got up and stood.
9 And Jesus said to them, ‘I ask YOU, is it right to do good on the Sabbath, or to do wrong? To save a life, or to destroy it?’
10 And looking around at them all, he said to him, ‘Stretch forth your hand.’ And he did, and his hand was restored.
11 But they were filled with stupidity; and were talking to each other about what they might do to Jesus.
12 And it happened in these days that he went out into the mountain to pray; and he continued all night in prayer to God.
13 And when it was day, he called his disciples over; and he chose twelve from them, whom he also named apostles:
14 Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James (Jacob) and John, and Philip and Bartholomew,
15 and Matthew and Thomas, and James (Jacob) the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot,
16 and Judas the son of James (Jacob), and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor;
17 And he came down with them, and stood on a level place, and a large crowd of his disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their sicknesses;
18 and those troubled by unclean spirits were healed.
19 And all the crowd sought to touch him, because power was coming out from him and was healing all.
20 And he lifted up his eyes to his disciples, and said, ‘Blessed are the poor, because the kingdom of God is YOURS.
21 Blessed are those who hunger now, because YOU will be filled. Blessed are those who weep now, because YOU will laugh.
22 Blessed are YOU when men hate YOU, and when they exclude YOU, and reproach YOU, and throw out YOUR name as evil because of the Son of man.
23 Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for look: YOUR reward in heaven is great; for their fathers did the same to the prophets.
24 But woe to YOU the rich, because YOU are having YOUR consolation now.
25 Woe to YOU, those who are full now, because YOU will hunger. Woe, those who laugh now, because YOU will mourn and weep.
26 Woe, when all men speak well of YOU, for their fathers did the same to the false prophets.
27 But to YOU who hear, I say love YOUR enemies, do good to those hating YOU,
28 bless those cursing YOU, pray for those slandering YOU.
29 To the one striking you on the cheek, offer also the other; and from the one taking away your coat, do not withhold your shirt either.
30 Give to every one asking you; and from the one taking your belongings away, don’t ask for them back again.
31 And just as YOU want men to do to YOU, do likewise to them.
32 And if YOU love those who love YOU, what credit is it to YOU? For the sinners also love those who love them.
33 And if YOU do good to those who do good to YOU, what credit is it to YOU? For the sinners are doing the same.
34 And if YOU lend to those from whom YOU hope to receive, what credit is it to YOU? Sinners also lend to sinners, in order to get back the same again.
35 But love YOUR enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back; and YOUR reward will be great, and YOU will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind toward the unthankful and evil.
36 Become merciful, just as YOUR Father is merciful.
37 And don’t judge, and YOU will by no means be judged: and don’t condemn, and YOU will by no means be condemned: release, and YOU will be released:
38 give, and it will be given to YOU: a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, overflowing, they will give into YOUR bosom. For with whatever measurement YOU measure, it will be measured to YOU in return.’
39 And he also told them a parable: “Can a blind man guide a blind man? Won’t they both fall into a ditch?
40 A disciple is not above the teacher: but every one having been perfected will be like his teacher.
41 But why do you see the twig that is in your brother's eye, but don’t notice the beam that is in your own eye?
42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me throw out the twig that is in your eye,’ when you don’t see the beam that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First throw the beam out of your eye, and then you’ll see clearly to throw out the twig that is in your brother's eye.
43 For there is no good tree producing rotten fruit; nor again a rotten tree producing good fruit.
44 For each tree is known by its own fruit. For they don’t gather figs out of thorns, nor do they gather grapes out of a briar bush.
45 The good man produces what is good out of the good treasure of his heart; and the evil man produces what is evil out of the evil treasure: for his mouth speaks out of the abundance of the heart.
46 But why are YOU calling me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not doing what I say?
47 Every one who comes to me, and hears my words, and does them, I will show YOU to whom he is like:
48 he is like a man building a house, who dug and went down deep, and laid a foundation on the rock: and when a flood came, the current broke against that house, and wasn’t strong enough to shake it, because of it’s having been well built.
49 But the one having heard, and not having done, is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; against which the current broke, and it collapsed at once; and the ruin of that house was great.
Luke 7
1 Since he completed all his sayings in the people’s hearing, he entered into Capernaum.
2 And a certain centurion's slave, who was valued by him, being ill, was at the point of death.
3 But having heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and save his slave.
4 And they, when they came to Jesus, entreated him earnestly, saying, ‘The one for whom you would bestow this is worthy,
5 for he loves our nation, and he built the synagogue for us.’
6 And Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself; for I am not fit that you should enter under my roof:
7 which is why I didn’t think myself worthy to come to you: but say a word, and let my servant be healed.
8 For I am also a man placed under authority, having soldiers under myself: and I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does.”
9 And when Jesus heard these things, he wondered at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, ‘I’m telling YOU, I haven’t even found such great faith in Israel!’
10 And returning to the house, those who were sent found the slave in health.
11 And it happened afterwards he went into a city called Nain; and his disciples were going with him, and a great crowd.
12 But as he got near the gate of the city, then look, an only son of his mother, having died, was being brought out, and she was a widow: and large crowd of the city was with her.
13 And when the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her, and said to her, ‘Don’t cry!’
14 And coming over, he touched the bier: and those carrying it stood still. And he said, ‘Young man, I’m telling you, get up!’
15 And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother.
16 And fear took hold on all: and they glorified God, saying that, ‘A great prophet was raised up among us!’ and, ‘God has looked upon his people!’
17 And this account went out about him in the whole of Judea, and all the surrounding region.
18 And the disciples of John told him about all these things.
19 And John, calling over a certain two of his disciples, sent them to the Lord, saying, ‘Are you the one coming, or are we waiting for another?’
20 And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one coming, or are we waiting for another?’”
21 In that hour he cured many from sicknesses and plagues and evil spirits; and to many blind, he granted sight.
22 And he answered and said to them, ‘Go and tell John what YOU saw and heard: the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.
23 And blessed is he, whoever doesn’t stumble on me.’
24 And when the messengers of John had gone, he began to say to the crowds about John, “What did YOU go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed being shaken by the wind?
25 But what did YOU go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Look, those in splendid clothes, and living in luxury, are in palaces.
26 But what did YOU go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I’m telling YOU, and much more than a prophet.
27 This is the one of whom it is written, ‘Look, I’m sending my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’
28 I’m telling YOU, among those born of women no one is greater than John: but the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
29 And all the people, having heard, also the tax collectors, justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John.
30 But the Pharisees and the scholars of the Law ignored the will of God for them, not having been baptized by him.
31 “To what, then will I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like?
32 They are like the children sitting in the marketplace, and calling to one another, who say, ‘We played the flute for YOU, and YOU didn’t dance; we wailed, and YOU didn’t weep.’
33 For John the Baptist has come not eating bread or drinking wine; and YOU say, ‘He has a demon!’
34 The Son of man has come eating and drinking; and YOU say, ‘Look, a gluttonous man, and a wine drinker, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
35 And wisdom was justified by all her children.”
36 And one of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him. And having entered into the Pharisee's house, he reclined at the table.
37 And look, a woman who was in the city, a sinner; and when she ascertained that he was reclining at the table in the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster container of ointment,
38 and standing behind by his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said within himself, saying, ‘This man, if he were the prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is touching him, that she is a sinner.’
40 And Jesus answering said to him, ‘Simon, I have something to say to you.’ And he says, ‘Say it, Teacher!’
41 A certain lender had two debtors: the one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
42 As they had no means to repay, he forgave them both. Which of them, then, will love him most?’
43 Simon answered and said, ‘I suppose the one to whom he forgave the most.’ And he said to him, ‘You judged correctly.’
44 And turning to the woman, he said to Simon, ‘Are you looking at this woman? I entered into your house, you gave me no water for my feet: but she wet my feet with her tears, and wiped them with her hair.
45 You gave me no kiss: but she, from the moment I came in, hasn’t stopped kissing my feet.
46 You didn’t anoint my head with oil: but she anointed my feet with perfumed oil.
47 Because of this, I tell you her many sins are forgiven, because she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, he loves little.’
48 And he said to her, ‘Your sins are forgiven.’
49 And those reclining at the table with him began to say within themselves, ‘Who is this who even forgives sins?’
50 But he said to the woman, ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace.’
Luke 8
1 And it happened soon afterwards, that he was traveling around through every city and village, preaching and telling the good news of the kingdom of God, and the twelve with him,
2 and some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary, who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,
3 and Joanna, the woman of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many other women, who ministered to them out of their own possessions.
4 And when a great crowd gathered together, and some of those who followed him from city to city, he said by means of a parable:
5 ‘The sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the roadside; and it was trampled down, and the birds of the heaven ate it.
6 And some other fell on the rock; and having sprouted, it was dried up, because it had no moisture.
7 And some other fell in the midst of the thorns; and growing up together, the thorns choked it.
8 And some other fell into the good ground, and having sprouted, it produced fruit a hundredfold.’ As he said these things, he called out, ‘The one having ears to hear, let him hear!’
9 But his disciples were asking him what this parable might be.
10 And he said, ‘It has been given to YOU to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to the rest in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.
11 But this is the parable: The seed is the word of God.
12 And those by the roadside are those who have heard, then the devil comes, and takes the word away from their heart, so that they may not believe and be saved.
13 And those on the rock are those who, when they have heard, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away.
14 And that which fell into the thorns, these are those who have heard, and as they go on their way, they are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of life, and produce no fruit to ripeness.
15 And that in the good ground, these are those who, having heard the word in a virtuous and good heart, keep it, and produce fruit by endurance.
16 And no one, having lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand, so that those going in may see the light.
17 For there is nothing hidden, that will not be made manifest; nor anything secret, that will never be known and come into the open.
18 So watch how YOU hear: for whoever has, it will be given to him; and whoever doesn’t have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.’
19 And his mother and brethren came to him, but they couldn’t get to him because of the crowd.
20 And it was told to him, ‘Your mother and your brethren are standing outside, wanting to see you.’
21 But he answered and said to them, ‘My mother and my brethren are these who hear the word of God, and do it.’
22 Now it happened one day that he and his disciples got into a boat, and he said to them, ‘Let’s go over to the other side of the lake.’ And they set out.
23 But as they sailed he fell asleep: and a windstorm came down on the lake; and they were being filled with water, and were in danger.
24 And coming over, they woke him, saying, ‘Master, Master, we’re perishing!’ And he, awakened, rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was calm.
25 And he said to them, ‘Where is YOUR faith?’ And being afraid, they wondered, saying one to another, ‘So who is this, that he even commands the winds and the water, and they obey him?’
26 And they sailed down to the country of the Gerasenes, which is on the side opposite Galilee.
27 But when he had gotten out onto the land, some man from the city met him, who had demons; and for a long time he hadn’t worn clothes, and he didn’t stay in a house, but in the tombs.
28 And having seen Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, ‘What do I have to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg of you, don’t torment me!’
29 For he was commanding the unclean spirit to come out from the man. For manytimes it had seized him: and he had been bound with chains and fetters, and kept under guard, and breaking through the shackles, he was driven into the desolate places by the demon.
30 And Jesus asked him, ‘What is your name?’ And he said, ‘Legion,’ because many demons had entered into him.
31 And they were entreating him that he would not command them to go away into the abyss.
32 Now there was there a herd of many pigs feeding on the mountain: and they entreated him that he would give them permission to enter into them. And he gave them permission.
33 And the demons came out from the man, and entered into the pigs: and the herd rushed over the precipice into the lake, and drowned.
34 And when the herders saw what had happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country.
35 And they came out to see what had happened; and they came to Jesus, and found the man, from whom the demons came out, sitting, clothed and in his right mind, at the feet of Jesus: and they were afraid.
36 And those who saw it told them how the demoniac was made well.
37 And all the multitude of the surrounding region of the Gerasenes asked him to go away from them, because they were taken with great fear: and getting into a boat, he returned.
38 But the man from whom the demons had gone out begged him that he might be with him: but he let him go, saying,
39 ‘Return to your home, and tell what great things God did for you.’ And he went, preaching throughout the whole city what things Jesus had done for him.
40 And as Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him; for they were all waiting for him.
41 And look, a man named Jairus came, and he was a leader of the synagogue: and falling down at Jesus' feet, he besought him to come into his house,
42 because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. But as he was going, the crowds thronged him.
43 And a woman having a flow of blood twelve years, (some manuscripts add: “who had spent all her living on physicians,”) and couldn’t be healed by anyone,
44 came from behind, and touched the fringe of his garment: and instantly the flow of her blood stopped.
45 And Jesus said, ‘Who is it who touched me?’ And when all denied, Peter said, ‘Master, the crowds are hemming you in and pressing against you!’
46 But Jesus said, ‘Someone touched me; for I perceived that power had gone out from me.’
47 And when the woman saw that she had not escaped notice, she came trembling, and falling down before him, told in the sight of all the people for what reason she touched him, and how she was healed instantly.
48 And he said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.’
49 While he was still speaking, someone comes from the synagogue leader's house, saying, ‘Your daughter has died; don’t bother the Teacher any further.’
50 But Jesus hearing it, answered him, ‘Don’t be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well’.
51 But when he came to the house, he wouldn’t let anyone go in with him, except Peter, and John, and James (Jacob), and the father of the girl and the mother.
52 And all were weeping, and beating themselves for her (beating the breast as a sign of mourning): but he said, ‘Don’t weep; for she didn’t die, but is sleeping.’
53 And they ridiculed him, knowing that she had died.
54 But he, taking her by the hand, called, saying, ‘Girl, get up!’
55 And her spirit returned, and she stood up instantly: and he commanded that something be given to her to eat.
56 And her parents were beside themselves, but he instructed them to tell no one what had happened.
Luke 9
1 And having called together the twelve, he gave them power and authority over all the demons, and to cure sicknesses.
2 And he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal.
3 And he said to them, ‘Take nothing for the road, neither staff, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money; neither have two coats.
4 And into whatever house YOU enter, stay there, and go out from there.
5 And as many as don’t receive YOU, going out from that city, shake off the dust from YOUR feet for a testimony against them.’
6 And going out, they went from village to village, preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere.
7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of everything happening, and he was thoroughly perplexed, because it was said by some that John was raised from the dead;
8 and by some, that Elijah appeared; and by others, that one of the old prophets had arisen.
9 And Herod said, ‘John I beheaded, but who is this, about whom I’m hearing such things?’ And he was seeking to see him.
10 And the apostles, having returned, related to him (Jesus) what they did. And taking them along, he withdrew to a private place, to a city called Bethsaida.
11 But the crowds, knowing, followed him, and welcoming them, he spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and he cured those having need of healing.
12 And the day began to wind down; and the twelve came, and said to him, ‘Let the crowd go, so that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside, and lodge, and find provisions, because we’re here in an isolated place.’
13 But he said to them, ‘YOU give them something to eat.’ But they said, ‘We have no more than five loaves and two fish; unless we should go and buy food for all these people.’
14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, ‘Make them get down in groups, about fifty each.’
15 And they did so, and made them all get down.
16 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up into heaven, he blessed, and broke them; and gave to the disciples to put before the crowd.
17 And they ate, and were all filled: and what was leftover to them was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.
18 And it happened, as he was praying in a private spot, the disciples came to him together. And he asked them, saying, ‘Who do the crowds say that I am?’
19 And they, answering, said, ‘John the Baptist; but others say, Elijah; and others, that one of the old prophets has arisen.’
20 And he said to them, ‘But who do YOU say that I am?’ And Peter answering said, ‘The Christ of God.’
21 But warning them, he instructed them to tell this to no one;
22 saying, ‘The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.’
23 But he said to them all, ‘If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and pick up his cross daily, and follow me.
24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for my sake, this one will save it.
25 For what is a man profited, if he has gained the whole world, but has lost himself or has suffered injury?
26 For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of man will be ashamed of this one, when he comes in the glory of himself and the Father, and of the holy angels.
27 But I’m telling YOU truthfully, there are some of those standing here, who will by no means taste of death, until they see the kingdom of God.’
28 And it happened about eight days after these words, that he went up into the mountain to pray, taking along Peter and John and James (Jacob).
29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face became different, and his clothing flashed white like lightning.
30 And look, two men were speaking with him, who were Moses and Elijah.
31 These, appearing in glory, were talking about his departure which he was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.
32 Now Peter and those with him had been weighed down with sleep: but having fully awaken, they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him.
33 And it happened, as they were moving away from him, Peter said to Jesus, ‘Master, it’s good for us to be here: and let us make three tents; one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah,’ not knowing what he was saying.
34 But while he was saying these things, a cloud formed, and overshadowed them: and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud.
35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, ‘This is my Son, the One chosen: hear him!’
36 And as the voice came, Jesus was found alone. And they became silent, and told no one in those days any of the things they had seen.
37 But it happened, on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him.
38 And look, a man from the crowd called out, saying, ‘Teacher, I’m begging you to look at my son; because he is my only child:
39 and look, a spirit takes hold of him, and he suddenly cries out; and it convulses him with foaming, and it hardly goes away from him, bruising him.
40 And I begged your disciples to throw it out; and they couldn’t.’
41 And Jesus answered and said, ‘O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be by YOU, and put up with YOU? Bring your son here.’
42 And as he was coming, the demon convulsed him, and threw him down. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
43 And they were all astonished at the magnificence of God. But while all were wondering about all the things which he was doing, he said to his disciples,
44 ‘Put these words into YOUR ears: for the Son of man is about to be given over into the hands of men.’
45 But they didn’t understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, so that they might not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
46 And a discussion arose among them, as to who was the greatest of them.
47 But Jesus, having known the discussion of their heart, took a little boy, and stood him beside him,
48 and said to them, ‘Whoever receives this little boy in my name receives me: and whoever receives me receives the One who sent me: for the one who is least among YOU all, this one is great.’
49 And John answered and said, ‘Master, we saw someone throwing out demons in your name; and we stopped him, because he isn’t following with us.’
50 But Jesus said to him, ‘Don’t stop him, for whoever isn’t against YOU is for YOU.’
51 And it happened, when the days were being fulfilled for him to be taken up, he firmly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
52 and sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him.
53 And they didn’t receive him, because his face was going to Jerusalem.
54 And when the disciples James (Jacob) and John saw this, they said, ‘Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven, and consume them?’
55 But he turned, and rebuked them.
56 And they went to another village.
57 And as they went on the way, someone said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’
58 And Jesus said to him, ‘The foxes have holes, and the birds of the heaven have nests; but the Son of man has no where to lay his head.’
59 And he said to another, ‘Follow me.’ But he said, ‘Let me first go and bury my father.’
60 But he said to him, ‘Let the dead bury their own dead; but you go and publish abroad the kingdom of God.’
61 And another also said, ‘I’ll follow you, Lord; but first let me say goodbye to those in my house.’
62 But Jesus said to him, ‘No one, having put a hand upon the plow, and looking at the things behind, is fit for the kingdom of God. ‘
Luke 10
1 Now after these things, the Lord appointed seventy two others, and sent them out two by two before his face into every city and place where he was about to come.
2 And he said to them, “The harvest indeed is much, but the workers are few: so ask the Lord of the harvest, that he send out workers into his harvest.
3 Go; look, I’m sending YOU out as lambs in the midst of wolves.
4 Carry no purse, no wallet, no shoes; and greet no one on the way.
5 And into whatever house YOU enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’
6 And if a son of peace is there, YOUR peace will rest upon him: but if not, it will return to YOU.
7 And stay in this house, eating and drinking the things from them: for the worker is worthy of his wages. Don’t go from house to house.
8 And into whatever city YOU enter, and they receive YOU, eat the things put before YOU:
9 and heal those sick in it, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has drawn near to YOU.’
10 But into whatever city YOU enter, and they don’t receive YOU, coming out into its streets, say,
11 ‘Even the dust that stuck to our feet from YOUR city, we wipe off to YOU: Nevertheless, know this, that the kingdom of God has drawn near!’
12 I’m telling YOU, it will be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.
13 Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! Because if the powerful works which took place in YOU had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
14 But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment, than for YOU.
15 And you, Capernaum, won’t you be exalted to heaven? You will come down to Hades!
16 The one hearing YOU is hearing me; and the one disregarding YOU is disregarding me; and the one disregarding me is disregarding the One who sent me.”
17 And the seventy two returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!’
18 And he said to them, ‘I watched Satan fallen as lightning from heaven!
19 Look, I have given YOU authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing will by any means hurt YOU.
20 Nevertheless, don’t rejoice over this, that the spirits are subject to YOU; but rejoice that YOUR names have been written in heaven!’
21 In that same hour he leaped for joy in the Holy Spirit, and said, ‘I acknowledge to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to babes: yes, Father, because it was well-pleasing that way before you!
22 All things were handed over to me by my Father: and no one knows who the Son is, except the Father; and who the Father is, except the Son, and to whomever the Son wants to reveal him.’
23 And turning to the disciples, he said privately, ‘Blessed are the eyes that see what YOU see.
24 For I’m telling YOU that many prophets and kings desired to see what YOU see, and they didn’t see them; and to hear what YOU hear, and they didn’t hear them.’
25 And look, a certain Law scholar stood up, testing him, saying, ‘Teacher, what do I do to inherit eternal life?’
26 And he said to him, ‘What is written in the law? How do you read?’
27 And he, answering, said, ‘You will love the Lord your God with your whole heart, and with your whole soul, and with your whole strength, and with your whole mind; and your neighbor as yourself.’
28 And he said to him, ‘You answered correctly: Do this, and you’ll live.’
29 But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbor?’
30 Jesus, taking up the topic, said, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho; and he fell among robbers, who having both stripped him and beat him, went off, leaving him half dead.
31 Now by coincidence, a certain priest was going down that road: and having seen him, he went past on the other side.
32 And likewise a Levite also, having come to the place and seen him, went past on the other side.
33 But a certain Samaritan, traveling, came upon him: and having seen him, was moved with compassion,
34 and coming over, he bandaged up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and putting him on his own beast, he brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
35 And on the next day, taking out two denarii, he gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you upon my return.’
36 Which of these three, does it seem to you, was a neighbor to the one who fell among the robbers?”
37 And he said, ‘The one who acted mercifully to him.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Go, and do likewise yourself.’
38 Now as they went on their way, he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at the Lord's feet, and heard his word.
40 But Martha was distracted about much serving; and she came up to him, and said, ‘Lord, doesn’t it matter to you that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to help me!’
41 But the Lord answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things:
42 but there is need of few things, or of one: for Mary chose the good part, which will not be taken away from her.’
Luke 11
1 And it happened, as he was praying in a certain place, that when he stopped, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, like John also taught his disciples.
2 So he said to them, “When YOU pray, say, ‘Father, let your name be sanctified. Let your kingdom come.
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins; for we ourselves also forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us into temptation.’”
5 And he said to them, “Which of YOU will have a friend, and will go to him at midnight, and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves,
6 because a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to put before him;’
7 and that one will answer from inside and say, ‘Don’t bother me: the door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed; I can’t get up to give to you’?
8 I’m telling YOU, even if he won’t get up and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his bold insistence, he will get up and give him as many loaves as he needs.
9 And I’m telling YOU, Ask, and it will be given to YOU; seek, and YOU will find; knock, and it will be opened to YOU.
10 For everyone asking receives; and the one seeking finds; and to the one knocking, it will be opened.
11 And what father among YOU, if his son will ask for a fish, will give him a serpent instead of a fish? (Some translations also include the same question with a loaf of bread and a stone.)
12 Or if he will ask for an egg, too, will he give him a scorpion?
13 So if YOU, being evil, know how to give good gifts to YOUR children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those asking him?”
14 And he was throwing out a mute demon. And it happened, when the demon had come out, the mute spoke; and the crowds wondered.
15 But some of them said, ‘He’s throwing out demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons!” (Beelzebul: One of the titles given to Satan was Beelzebub, from the Hebrew “baal zevuv” meaning “lord of flies.” Beelzebul is an insulting variant, from “baal zevul” meaning “lord of dung.”)
16 And others, testing, were seeking from him a sign from heaven.
17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falls.
18 And if Satan is also divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? Because YOU’re saying that I’m throwing out demons by Beelzebul…
19 But if I’m throwing out demons by Beelzebub, by whom are YOUR sons throwing them out? Therefore they’ll be YOUR judges.
20 But if I’m throwing out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has overtaken YOU.
21 When the strong, being fully armed, guards his courtyard, his belongings are in peace:
22 but when a stronger than he, having come upon him, conquers him, he takes from him the whole armament in which he had been trusting, and divides his spoils.
23 The one who is not with me is against me; and the one not gathering with me is scattering.
24 When the unclean spirit comes out of the man, it passes through waterless places, seeking a resting place, and not finding. Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from where I came out.’
25 And having come, it finds it unoccupied, swept and decorated.
26 Then it goes away, and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself; and entering in, they dwell there: and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.”
27 And it happened, as he said these things, someone out of the crowd, a woman, lifted up her voice, and said to him, ‘Blessed is the womb that carried you, and the breasts which you sucked!’
28 But he said, ‘Blessed, rather, are those hearing the word of God, and keeping it!’
29 And when the crowds were gathering together, he began to say, ‘This generation is an evil generation: it’s seeking a sign; and a sign will not be given to it, except the sign of Jonah.
30 For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so the Son of man will also be to this generation.
31 The queen of the south will be raised up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and will condemn them: because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and look, something more than Solomon is here.
32 The men of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and look, something more than Jonah is here.
33 No one, having lit a lamp, puts it in a cellar, nor under the bushel, but on the lamp stand, so that those entering in may see the light.
34 The lamp of the body is your eye: when your eye is single, your whole body is also illuminated; but when it’s evil, your body is also dark.
35 So watch that the light that’s in you isn’t darkness.
36 So if your whole body is illuminated, having no part dark, it will be wholly illuminated, like when the lamp with its shining gives you light.’
37 But as he was speaking, a Pharisee is asking him to dine with him: and going in, he reclined at the table.
38 And the Pharisee, having seen, wondered because he hadn’t first washed before dinner.
39 But the Lord said to him, ‘Now YOU, the Pharisees, clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but the inside of YOU is full of extortion and wickedness.
40 Senseless ones, didn’t the One who made the outside also make the inside?
41 But give for charity those things which are inside; and look, all things are clean to YOU.
42 But woe to YOU Pharisees! Because YOU tithe mint and rue and every herb, and bypass justice and the love of God: and it was necessary to do these things, and not to let those other things go.
43 Woe to YOU Pharisees! Because YOU love the front seats in the synagogues, and the greetings in the marketplaces.
44 Woe to YOU! Because YOU are like the tombs that aren’t seen, and the men walk above and don’t even know it.’
45 And one of the Law scholars, answering, says to him, ‘Teacher, in saying these things, you’re also insulting us!’
46 And he said, “Woe to YOU Law scholars, too! Because YOU load men with burdens difficult to be carried, and YOU YOURSELVES don’t touch the burdens with one of YOUR fingers.
47 Woe to YOU! Because YOU build the tombs of the prophets, but YOUR fathers killed them!
48 So YOU are witnesses, and consent to the deeds of YOUR fathers: because they certainly killed them, but YOU’re building their tombs.
49 Because of this also the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send prophets and apostles to them; and they will kill and persecute some of them;
50 so that the blood of all the prophets, which was poured out from the foundation of the world, may be required from this generation;
51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah, who was murdered between the altar and the house.’ Yes, I’m telling YOU, it will be required from this generation.
52 Woe to YOU, Law scholars! Because YOU took away the key of knowledge: YOU YOURSELVES didn’t enter in, and YOU hindered those who were entering in.”
53 And when he had gone out from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to block him in excessively, and to catechize him about more things;
54 lying in wait for him, to catch something out of his mouth.
Luke 12
1 In the meantime, when the ten thousands of the crowd were gathered together, to the point where they were stepping on one another, he began first telling his disciples, ‘Watch out for the Pharisees’ yeast, which is hypocrisy.
2 But there is nothing hidden, that will not be revealed; and secret, that will not be known.
3 Therefore, whatever YOU said in the darkness will be heard in the light; and what YOU spoke in the ear in the inner rooms will be preached upon the housetops.
4 But I’m telling YOU, my friends, don’t be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that, have nothing more that they can do.
5 But I will show YOU whom YOU should fear: Fear the One who, after killing, has authority to throw into Gehenna; yes, I’m telling YOU, fear this One.
6 Aren’t five sparrows sold for two assarii? (coins of little value) And not one of them is forgotten in the sight of God.
7 But the hairs of YOUR head have all been numbered, too. Don’t be afraid: YOU are more valuable than many sparrows!
8 And I’m telling YOU, every one who will confess me before men, the Son of man will also confess him before the angels of God:
9 but the one who has denied me in the sight of men will be denied in the sight of the angels of God.
10 And every one who will say a word against the Son of man, it will be forgiven to him: but to the one having blasphemed against the Holy Spirit it will not be forgiven.
11 And when they bring YOU before the synagogues, and the rulers, and the authorities, don’t be anxious how or what defense YOU should make, or what YOU should say:
12 for the Holy Spirit will teach YOU in that very hour what YOU ought to say.’
13 And someone out of the crowd said to him, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.’
14 But he said to him, ‘Man, who made me a judge or a divider over YOU?’
15 And he said to them, ‘Watch out and keep YOURSELVES from all greed, because a person's life doesn’t consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.’
16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a certain rich man produced well.
17 And he reasoned within himself, saying, ‘What will I do, because I don’t have anywhere to gather my fruit?’
18 And he said, ‘I’ll do this: I will take down my barns, and build larger ones; and I’ll gather all my grain and goods there.
19 And I’ll say to my soul, Soul, you have many good things laid up for many years; take it easy, eat, drink, be merry.’
20 But God said to him, ‘Senseless one, your soul will be asked of you this night; and the things which you prepared, whose will they be?’
21 The one laying up treasure for himself is like that, and is not rich toward God.”
22 And he said to his disciples, ‘For this reason I’m telling YOU, don’t be anxious about YOUR life, what YOU should eat; nor for YOUR body, what YOU should put on.
23 For the life is more than the food, and the body than what is put on it.
24 Consider the ravens, that they don’t sow, nor reap; who have no barn or storehouse; and God feeds them: How much more valuable are YOU than the birds?
25 But who among YOU can add a cubit to his lifespan by being anxious?
26 So if YOU aren’t able to do even the least, why are YOU anxious about the rest?
27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they don’t work hard, nor do they spin; but I’m telling YOU, not even Solomon in all his glory was dressed like one of these.
28 But if God clothes the grass in the field like this, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into an oven, how much more YOU, ones with little faith?
29 And YOU, don’t be looking for what YOU might eat, and what YOU might drink, and don’t be in doubt.
30 For the nations of the world are looking for all these things: but YOUR Father knows that YOU have need of these things.
31 But YOU look for his kingdom, and these things will be added to YOU.
32 Don’t be afraid, little flock, because YOUR Father thought it good to give YOU the kingdom.
33 Sell YOUR belongings, and give gifts of charity; make for YOURSELVES purses which don’t get old, a never-failing treasure in the heavens, where no thief gets near, nor moth consumes.
34 For where YOUR treasure is, there will YOUR heart be also.
35 Let YOUR loins be girded, and the lamps burning;
36 and YOU be like men waiting for their lord, when he returns from the marriage; so that, when he comes and knocks, they might immediately open to him.
37 Blessed are those slaves, whom the lord finds awake when he comes: Amen I’m telling YOU that he will gird himself, and make them recline at the table, and will come over and serve them.
38 And if he comes in the second watch, and if in the third watch, and finds it so, blessed are those slaves. (second watch: 9 pm to midnight; third watch: midnight to 3 am)
39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake, and not have left his house to be broken through.
40 YOU also be ready, because at an hour that YOU think not, the Son of man is coming.’
41 And Peter said, ‘Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or also to all?’
42 And the Lord said, “So who is the faithful steward, wise, whom his lord will set over his household staff, to give them their measure of food at the appointed time?
43 Blessed is that slave, whom his lord, when he comes, will find doing so.
44 Truthfully, I’m telling YOU that he will set him over all his belongings.
45 But if that slave should say in his heart, ‘My lord is taking his time coming’ and should start beating the servant boys and the maids, eating and drinking, and getting drunk,
46 the lord of that slave will arrive on a day when he isn’t expecting, and at an hour which he doesn’t know, and will cut him in two, and appoint his portion with the unfaithful.
47 And that slave, who knew his lord's will, and didn’t prepare, or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes;
48 but the one who didn’t know, and did things deserving stripes, will be beaten with few. And to everyone to whom much was given, from him much will be required: and to whom they commit much, from him they will ask more.
49 I came to throw fire upon the earth; and what do I want, if it was already lit?
50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how distressed I am till it’s finished!
51 Are YOU thinking that I came to give peace on the earth? No, I’m telling YOU, but rather division:
52 For from now on there will be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.
53 Father will be divided against son, and son against father; mother against daughter, and daughter against her mother; mother in law against her daughter in law, and daughter in law against mother in law.”
54 And he also said to the crowds, “When YOU see a cloud rising in the west, immediately YOU say, ‘A storm is coming’ and so it is.
55 And when a south wind is blowing, YOU say, ‘There will be a heat wave’ and it is.
56 Hypocrites, YOU know how to interpret the face of the earth and the heaven, but YOU don’t know not how to interpret this time?!
57 So why don’t YOU judge what is right for YOURSELVES?
58 For as you are going with your adversary before the ruler, on the way make an effort to be rid of him, so he doesn’t drag you to the judge, and the judge will deliver you to the court officer, and the court officer will throw you into prison.
59 I’m telling you, you will by no means come out of there, till you have paid back the very last lepton.” (Lepton: a coin of very small value)
Luke 13
1 Now at that very time, some were there telling him about the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
2 And answering, he said to them, ‘Do YOU think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the Galileans, because they have suffered these things?
3 No, I’m telling YOU, but unless YOU repent, YOU will all likewise be destroyed.
4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower fell in Siloam, and killed them, do YOU think that they were greater debtors than all the men inhabiting Jerusalem?
5 No, I’m telling YOU, but unless YOU repent, YOU will all likewise be destroyed.’
6 And he told this parable: “Someone had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it, and found none.
7 And he said to the pruner, ‘Look, for three years I come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and don’t find any. Cut it down; why let it make the ground ineffective, too?’
8 But he, answering, says to him, ‘Sir, let it go this year also, until I dig around it, and put manure on it:
9 and see if it produces fruit afterward… but if not, you’ll cut it down.’
10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.
11 And look, a woman having a spirit of weakness eighteen years; and she was bent over, and unable to straighten up completely.
12 And Jesus, having seen her, called and said to her, ‘Woman, you are released from your weakness.’
13 And he laid hands upon her: and instantly she was straightened up, and was glorifying God.
14 And the leader of the synagogue, being indignant because Jesus healed on the Sabbath, answered and said to the crowd, ‘There are six days in which it is necessary to work: so come get healed on them, and not on the day of the Sabbath!’
15 But the Lord answered him, and said, ‘Hypocrites, doesn’t each of YOU loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to give it a drink on the Sabbath?
16 And this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan bound, look, eighteen years, shouldn’t be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?’
17 And as he said these things, all those opposing him were put to shame: and all the crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things done by him.
18 So he said, ‘What is the kingdom of God like? And to what will I compare it?
19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took, and threw into his own garden; and it grew, and became a tree; and the birds of the heaven lodged in its branches.’
20 And again he said, ‘To what will I compare the kingdom of God?
21 It is like yeast, which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until it was all leavened.’
22 And was traveling through cities and villages, teaching, and making his way to Jerusalem.
23 And someone said to him, ‘Lord, are those being saved few?’ And he said to them,
24 “Struggle to enter through the narrow door, because I’m telling YOU many will seek to enter, and will not be able.
25 Whenever the master of the house gets up and locks the door, and YOU begin to stand outside, and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us;’ and he, answering, will say to YOU, ‘I don’t know where YOU’re from.’
26 Then YOU’ll start saying, ‘We ate and drank in your sight, and you taught in our open squares;’
27 and he’ll speak, saying to YOU, ‘I don’t know where YOU’re from; get away from me, all workers of unrighteousness!’
28 The weeping and the gnashing of teeth will be there, when YOU see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, but YOU being thrown outside.
29 And they will come from east and west, and from north and south, and will recline (as at a dinner) in the kingdom of God.
30 And look, there are last who will be first, and there are first who will be last.”
31 At that hour some Pharisees came, saying to him, ‘Get out, and go away from here, because Herod wants to kill you!’
32 And he said to them, “Go tell that fox, ‘Look, I’m throwing out demons and finishing up healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I am perfected.’ (or “completed”)
33 Nevertheless, I must travel today and tomorrow and the following day, because it isn’t acceptable for a prophet to be destroyed outside of Jerusalem.
34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her own brood under her wings, but YOU didn’t want to!
35 Look, YOUR house is left to YOU, and I’m telling YOU, YOU won’t see me, until YOU say, ‘Blessed is the one coming in the name of the Lord!’”
Luke 14
1 And it happened, when he came into the house of one of the leaders of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat bread, that they were watching him.
2 And look, there was a certain man in front of him who had the dropsy.
3 And Jesus, answering, spoke to the Law scholars and Pharisees, saying, ‘Is it right to heal on the Sabbath, or not?’
4 But they kept quiet. And taking hold of him, he healed him, and let him go.
5 And he said to them, ‘Which of YOU if his son or ox falls into a hole, will not immediately pull him up on a Sabbath day?’
6 And they couldn’t answer back to these things.
7 And he told a parable to those who had been invited, noting how they were choosing the first couches (for reclining at the table), saying to them,
8 “When you’re invited by someone to a marriage feast, you shouldn’t lie down in the first couch; someone more honorable than you may have been invited by him,
9 and the one who invited you and him will come and say to you, ‘Give the place to this one;’ and then you will start with shame to take the last place.
10 But when you’re invited, go and recline in the last place, so that when the one who has invited you comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher;’ and then you’ll have glory in the sight of all those reclining with you.
11 Because everyone exalting himself will be humbled; and the one humbling himself will be exalted.”
12 And he also said to the one who had invited him, ‘When you make a dinner or a supper, don’t call your friends, nor your brethren, nor your relatives, nor rich neighbors; or they might also invite you in return, and it would only be for repaying you.
13 But when you have a reception, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind:
14 and you’ll be blessed, because they have nothing to repay you: for it will be repaid to you in the resurrection of the righteous.’
15 And one of those reclining at the table with him, having heard these things, said to him, ‘Blessed is whoever will eat bread in the kingdom of God!’
16 But he said to him, “A certain man was making a great supper; and he invited many:
17 and he sent out his slave at supper time to say to those invited, ‘Come, because it’s ready now.’
18 And they all with one accord began to beg off. The first said to him, ‘I bought a field, and I need to go out to see it; I’m asking you, have me excused.’
19 And another said, ‘I bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m going to try them out; I’m asking you, have me excused.’
20 And another said, ‘I married a woman, and because of this I cannot come.’
21 And the slave came over, and told his lord these things. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his slave, ‘Go out quickly into the open squares and alleys of the city, and bring the poor and crippled and blind and lame in here!’
22 And the slave said, ‘Lord, what you ordered is done, and there is still room.’
23 And the lord said to the slave, ‘Go out into the roads and fences, and compel them to come in, so that my house might be filled.
24 For I’m telling YOU that none of those men who were invited will taste of my supper!’”
25 Now great crowds were going with him: and turning, he said to them,
26 “If anyone is coming to me, and doesn’t hate his own father, and mother, and woman, and children, and brothers, and sisters, and even his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
27 Whoever isn’t carrying his own cross and coming after me, cannot be my disciple.
28 For which of YOU, wanting to build a tower, doesn’t first sit down and calculate the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?
29 So that, having laid a foundation, and not being able to finish, all those seeing don’t begin ridiculing him,
30 saying, ‘This man started building, and wasn’t able to finish.’
31 Or what king, going to engage another king in war, won’t first sit down to take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
32 And if not, while the other is still far away, he sends ambassadors, asking for peace.
33 In the same way, then, every one of YOU who doesn’t say goodbye to all his own belongings, cannot be my disciple.
34 So salt is good: but if the salt has also become tasteless, with what shall it be seasoned?
35 It is neither fit for land nor for manure: People throw it out. The one having ears to hear, let him hear.”
Luke 15
1 Now all the tax collectors and sinners were drawing near to him to hear him.
2 And both the Pharisees and the scribes were murmuring, saying, ‘This one accepts sinners, and eats with them.’
3 But he told them this parable, saying,
4 “What man of YOU, having a hundred sheep, and having lost one of them, doesn’t leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?
5 And having found it, he puts it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
6 And having come home, he calls together friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, because I found my sheep that was lost!’
7 I’m telling YOU, that there will be such joy in heaven over one sinner repenting, than over ninety-nine righteous, who need no repentance.
8 Or what woman having ten drachmas, if she loses one drachma, doesn’t light a lamp, and sweep the house, and searches carefully until she finds it?
9 And having found it, she calls together her girlfriends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, because I found the drachma that I lost!’
10 Even so, I’m telling YOU, there is joy in the sight of the angels of God over one sinner repenting.”
11 And he said, “A certain man had two sons:
12 and the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me my portion of the property.’ And he divided his livelihood to them.
13 And not many days after, the younger son gathered everything together and traveled abroad into a far country; and there he squandered his property, living extravagantly.
14 And having spent everything, a great famine came down on that country; and he began to be in want.
15 And he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country; and he sent him into his field to feed pigs.
16 And he was wanting to be filled with the carob pods that the pigs were eating: but no one gave him any.
17 But when he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired men have more than enough bread, and I’m perishing here with famine!?
18 I’ll get up and go to my father, and I’ll say to him: Father, I sinned against heaven, and in your sight.
19 I’m no longer worthy to be called your son: make me as one of your hired men.’
20 And getting up, he came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck and kissed him.
21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I sinned against heaven, and in your sight: I’m no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me as one of your hired men.’
22 But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quick, bring out the best robe, and dress him; and put a ring on his hand, and sandals on his feet!
23 And bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat, and make merry:
24 because this son of mine was dead, and came to life again; he was lost, and is found!’ And they began to be merry.
25 Now his older son was in the field: and as he came and got near to the house, he heard music and dancing.
26 And he called over one of the servants, and inquired what these things might be.
27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has arrived; and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he got him back safely.’
28 But he became angry, and didn’t want to go in. But his father came out, and pleaded with him.
29 But he answered and said to his father, ‘Look, so many years I’m slaving for you, and never transgressed a commandment of yours; and you never even gave me a kid, so that I might make merry with my friends:
30 but when this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’
31 And he said to him, ‘Child, you are always with me, and everything that’s mine is yours.
32 But it was necessary to make merry and to rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead, and came to life; and was lost, and is found.’”

1 And he also said to the disciples, “A certain man was rich, who had a steward; and this one was accused to him that he was wasting his belongings.
2 And he called him, and said to him, ‘What is this I’m hearing about you? Turn in the account of your stewardship; for you can no longer be steward.’
3 But the steward said within himself, ‘What will I do, since my lord is taking the stewardship away from me? I’m not strong enough to dig; I’m ashamed to beg.
4 I know what I’ll do, so that, when I am transferred out of the stewardship, people might welcome me into their houses.’
5 And calling to him each one of his lord's debtors, he said to the first, ‘How much do you owe to my lord?’
6 And he said, ‘A hundred measures of oil.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your note, sit down, and quickly write fifty.’
7 Then said he to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ And he said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ He says to him, ‘Take your note, and write eighty.’
8 And the lord commended the unrighteous steward because he acted wisely: because the sons of this world are wiser for their own generation than the sons of the light are.
9 And I’m telling YOU, make friends for YOURSELVES by means of the riches of unrighteousness; so that, when it fails, they might receive YOU into the everlasting tabernacles.
10 The one faithful in a little is also faithful in much: and the one unrighteous in a little is also unrighteous in much.
11 So if YOU haven’t been faithful with the unrighteous riches, who will entrust the true riches to YOU?
12 And if YOU haven’t been faithful with what is another's, who will give YOU what is YOUR own?
13 No servant can slave for two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. YOU cannot slave for God and riches.”
14 And the Pharisees who were lovers of money, heard all these things; and they sneered at him.
15 And he said to them, “YOU are the ones justifying YOURSELVES in the sight of men; but God knows YOUR hearts: because what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
16 The law and the prophets were until John: since then the kingdom of God is preached as good news, and everyone is crowding into it.
17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one tittle of the law to fall. (Tittle: a tiny decoration used to adorn the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.)
18 Every one divorcing his woman, and marrying another, is committing adultery: and the one marrying the woman divorced from a man is committing adultery.
